How to Homeschool Like a Boss

These are a few things that have made my life so much easier in my 15 years of homeschooling.

Homeschool Curriculum

Think about how your child learns best and teach to their strengths. By doing this you will bring out the best in your child. They will love learning and want to do more. Not only that, but they will be able to comprehend and remember what they are learning.

This is an important step in knowing what to teach, picking curriculum, and how your day will look.

I’ll be honest when I first started homeschooling my middle boys I knew I could do anything. They were always extremely easy, loved doing everything, and never complained. This all changed when I added in Little B.

Don’t get me wrong my middle two are still really easy when it comes to homeschooling, but Little B not so much.

Be Prepared

That brings me to Have a Plan… Whether you are a planner or not it helps to be prepared.

Here is an idea for a simple plan.

This year we are planning on using FIAR for some of our homeschooling. I’ll get more into how I plan out FIAR rows later on, but for now, here is a look at my ideas planning sheet.

It’s pretty basic. I jot down 5-10 things I think would be a great fit for the children and go along with the curriculum. Use their learning styles as a guide for your planning.

If you want to homeschool like a boss you have to know when to scratch the plan and take the day off. Head to the beach or the park and have some fun.

Maybe you could use a little Vitamin D, or you can tell the kids just need to get out of the house. Skip the plan. There’s always tomorrow to “do school,” I think you should go play!

Think about your child’s daily rhythm

Are they morning people or do you all like to sleep in? Figuring it out and making it work is a homeschool saver.

My kids know that I need my coffee and at least an hour to start the day. Laundry, breakfast, checking emails whatever it is I need that hour 😉

We have found that a good starting time for us is around 9 am. If you have teenagers that like to sleep in starting at 10 or 11 might work better for you. I know a few homeschool families with teens that start later and it works out great for them.

It’s good to think about this step each year because as your children get older, their natural rhythm changes.

Best Advice: Do what works for your family.

Get Outside

Spend time outside every day. Think about taking walks with the kids, it can get you moving towards your healthy 10,000 steps a day, the children can collect things for your nature table, plus get their own energy out.

You’re Practically a Pro Already

If you have younger children work on getting into a routine, and keep it posted for easy transitions.

Another lifesaver for so many is a daily visual schedule for kids. Whether you just use a few of the cards to guide children throughout the day or you like to have every hour scheduled out. A visual calendar can help your children prepare themselves for what is coming next.

Be Flexible

You might be like me and spend months looking through catalogs, researching curriculum and jotting down ideas… you finally feel like you’ve made the best decision for your family only to start homeschooling and realize it’s not 100% perfect. Right? There usually isn’t one curriculum that is going to be a perfect fit for all of your children and that’s okay.

Being flexible and adjusting your homeschool curriculum to fit your family will make everyone happy.

Have fun and enjoy the sweet moments together

You got this!
