The Best Hands on Learning Human Anatomy Activities (free printables)

Learning about the human body doesn’t have to mean memorizing dry facts from a textbook, it can be an exciting, hands-on adventure! Hands-on human anatomy activities give kids the chance to explore how their bodies work through engaging, sensory experiences rather than passive reading.

From building a model skeleton out of pasta to creating a squishy “digestive system” with everyday kitchen items, these interactive projects transform abstract concepts like bones, organs, and muscles into something kids can see, touch, and truly understand.

Not only do these activities make science come alive, but they also encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong appreciation for how amazing the human body really is.

Whether used in a classroom, homeschool setting, or simply for a rainy afternoon at home, hands-on anatomy activities are a fun and effective way to help children connect with the wonders of biology.

Hands on Learning Human Anatomy Activities

This month, for 12 months of Montessori, we are sharing Human Anatomy Activities. Learning about your body and how it works starts at a very early age, so I felt like these hands-on learning ideas would be perfect for preschoolers and up.

I think you will have fun teaching human anatomy activities to your kids, and they will love learning this way. Have fun!

We have had an amazing month-long unit study with great hands-on learning activities. You can head over to Montessori Human Anatomy Activities to see how we explored human organs and download yourfree printables here.

Fun Anatomy Ideas for Kids

Here are some fun, hands-on activities that help kids explore human anatomy in a memorable way:

Pasta Skeleton Craft
Using different types of pasta (like rigatoni for arm and leg bones, small shells for the hands and feet, and bowtie pasta for the pelvis), kids can glue pieces onto black construction paper to create their very own skeleton. This activity helps reinforce bone names and placement while being a fun art project.

Edible Digestive System
Turn snack time into a science lesson! Using items like a plastic bag (stomach), crackers and juice (food being broken down), and a pair of tights (intestines), kids can simulate the digestive process step by step, squishing and mashing their way to understanding how food moves through the body.

Life-Size Body Tracing
Have your child lie down on a large roll of butcher paper and trace their outline. Then, let them draw or glue on organs, bones, and systems in the correct locations. This is a great way to visualize where everything is inside their own body.

Balloon Lungs Model
Using a plastic bottle, balloons, and a straw, kids can build a simple model that demonstrates how the diaphragm helps lungs expand and contract. Watching the balloon “lungs” inflate and deflate makes the concept of breathing mechanics much easier to grasp.

Heartbeat and Pulse Investigation
Have kids find their pulse at their wrist or neck, then measure their heart rate before and after jumping jacks. This simple experiment teaches them about the circulatory system and how exercise affects the heart.

DIY Stethoscope
Using a funnel and a length of tubing, kids can make their own stethoscope to listen to their heartbeat and lungs in action. It’s a simple project that turns them into junior doctors for the day!

Muscle and Joint Model
Using cardboard tubes, string, and fasteners, children can build a model arm that bends at the “joint” when the string is pulled, mimicking how muscles and tendons work together to create movement.

Organ Puzzle Match
Print out images of different organs and have kids match them to their correct location on a body outline. This can be turned into a fun matching game or even a race to see who can correctly place all the organs first.

Anatomy Activities for Kids

The Pinay Homeschooler has this really cool post on the Anatomy of the Human Heart for Kids. My 7-year-old actually asked for a heart model for Christmas. I think that’s awesome, and I’m really excited to include these ideas in our learning.
