Just as quickly as fidget spinners became wildly popular this year, they got banned from many schools. Teachers across the world are defining fidget spinners as toys and toys are often not allowed at school. Many parents who have found fidget spinners useful for their anxious, fidgety children are frustrated that schools have banned these products. While you read, consider stepping away from the parental role and into the shoes of teachers. I’m not saying I agree with the schools; I’m just sharing this valuable information.

Fidget Spinners Interrupting
When children enter the classroom with more than one fidget spinner, often lessons are interrupted by students exchanging or lending these spinners to other students. When teachers are trying to educate our youth, they must have eyes and ears on them. When fidget spinners enter the classroom, it’s inevitable that students become distracted, comparing and sharing spares of fidget spinners during classroom learning time.
I’m not in any way saying we shouldn’t have fidget spinners in classrooms; I’m just wondering if children are using them the way they are intended 😉
Many schools have witnessed fidget spinners getting out of control with spinning. When a child uses a fidget spinner in class and tries to get it spinning the toy can slip out of the student’s hand and fly into another student or teachers face causing someone to get hurt. Many schools started to ban fidget spinners after they went flying across the room harming students and teachers.
High Distraction Rate
No matter what students bring into the classroom, it can ultimately distract the learning process. Whether it’s a stuffed animal, a chewing pencil or a new toy, it can be a distraction for teachers trying to educate. Fidget spinners have fast movements and often mesmerize a student which means their eyes will be on the toy versus the front of the classroom.
No Evidence they Help
While many parents argue that fidget spinners have been a saving grace for their anxious, fidgety children there isn’t any real study that has proven fidget spinners are the solution to this. Every child may be different, and some actually can benefit from the fidget spinner, but when it comes to schools, they have to make a school-wide decision and sometimes the children who seem to benefit from fidget spinners lose out.
Whatever your opinion is on fidget spinners, it’s clear that they became popular overnight and were brought into classrooms with the best intentions. With all of that being taken into consideration, surely you can see why many schools have banned these. With the factors that these are both distracting and dangerous, one can clearly see why schools don’t want the risk of having students and teachers harmed or distracted during lesson time.
Such a hard call…
