5 Reasons Why Your Kids Need to Read This Summer

Often time’s schools find that kids suffer from what’s called “Summer Slide.” This summer slide is a sign that kids weren’t reading or doing much of anything educational to continue using the skills learned in the year prior. Thankfully we homeschool and don’t have to worry about what school’s think, but I still don’t want my children moving backward. While summer break should be a time for family fun, relaxation and just enjoying childhood there’s a reason kids should incorporate books into their fun summer habits. A love for learning and quiet time are just a few of my favorite reasons, but let’s dive deeper into the reasons kids need to read this summer.

Why it is important to read

Reverses Summer Slide

The simple act of getting into a good book all summer long helps to reverse the summer slide. Reading a book doesn’t have to take a lot of time away from having summer fun nor does the book have to be a boring topic. When kids read something they enjoy over the summer season, they are keeping their brains engaged in an educational way which tends to reverse the results of summer slide.

We love to order Sonlight’s Summer Readers for our children. They introduce us to books we might not have heard about before, and they are always wonderful stories. We treasure these stories and end up talking about them for years.

Enhances Reading Proficiency

Another reason why your kids need to read is regardless of your child’s age; they can always get better at reading. With summer reading your kids can select genres that interest them and in turn build upon their vocabulary, increase imagination and become more fluent readers. Often kids think that they only need to read during schooling hours, but the truth is, there’s always great books to enjoy and a significant need to enhance reading proficiency regardless of your child’s age.

Encourages Creative Thinking Skills

Reading books opens the doors to whole new world, depending upon the genre that your kids are most interested in, they can travel to a fantasy world and truly embark upon the journey as they dive into reading a book. With historical books, children can be found thinking of ways they would have completed that historical journey. Kids’ creative thinking skills are enhanced with all genres of books.

Opens Conversations

Reading books helps to encourage open conversations between you and your kids. There’s nothing a parent will love more than hearing their child rave about their favorite adventure in a story or about something they learned when reading a non-fiction book. It’s great to sit at the dinner table and engage in conversations about books because it helps enhance your kids’ social skills and makes for great family bonding moments.

Just another reason we love Sonlight for Homeschooling. Having a great curriculum that brings everyone together through amazing stories and read a-louds has been a big part of creating a strong family bond.

Plus, homeschooling that keeps thriving year after year.
