Practical Life Skills: Those exercises through which the child learns to care for himself and the environment – This definition was taken from a favorite book of mine Teaching Montessori In The Home- The Preschool Years
If I can help you out at the beginning by telling you that implementing Montessori is going to take patience and observation. That’s a huge tip. Toddlers want to do everything by themselves. Yes this takes a little longer usually, but allow the extra time. You don’t want to miss out on seeing their faces light up as they complete tasks and skills by themselves. It’s truly a gift watching your child develop independence and confidence. If you are just getting started on your Montessori journey or ready to learn more, Montessori Today is a great read.
Today I’ll be sharing our Toddler Practical life skills, but don’t worry if you don’t have a toddler I have information and tips for your older children too.
Prepping snack and helping with meals.
It is great to have things at their height making it easy for them to help. I have a small yet perfect toddler size prep kitchen. (also known as Jenny’s Pantry from Elves & Angels). I’ve added a few things Bells uses often so she has easy access. If you prefer your child up at the counter you can invest in a learning tower/kitchen helper. They are amazing too. We like having both options, this way it makes it easy to cook together too.
Montessori Toddler Kitchen Supplies
Some of our favorite items for children to have are: Juice drinking glasses, small pitcher, children’s silverware, cutting board, tongs, chopper, child safe knife, utensils, bowls, smaller plates (easy for them to carry) the plates shown here are approximately 8 inches in diameter. It’s also great to have small kitchen towels or wash cloths nearby, I keep a stack of organic wash cloths on her prep station so she can clean up any drips or little mess.
*I’m not striving for perfection, just teaching her independence.
Pouring and Wiping the Table
Peeling fruits with their little fingers is great for their fine motor skills, concentration, and of course practical life skills.
These are suggested tasks for you to use as a guide. Some children will do things early and others later. Every child develops differently, but this is a great place to start.
