Isn’t nature amazing? Seriously just getting outside automatically makes you feel better. If it’s raining you can touch it, dance in it, jump in puddles. If it’s sunny, you can go on a picnic, read outdoors, take walks, and play. So honestly, exploring senses in nature is natural.

Here are some of the best ways to explore your senses in nature:

  1. Take a walk in the woods: Walking in the woods is a great way to connect with nature and awaken your senses. The sound of birds chirping, the smell of pine trees, and the feel of the forest floor under your feet can be calming and invigorating.

  2. Listen to the sounds of nature: Whether you’re sitting by a babbling brook or listening to the rustling of leaves in the wind, nature offers a variety of sounds that can be both relaxing and inspiring.

  3. Smell the flowers: Flowers offer a variety of scents that can be both soothing and uplifting. Take a walk through a garden or simply stop to smell the flowers daily.

  4. Taste the fruits of nature: Nature offers a variety of fruits and berries that can be both delicious and nutritious. Take a hike and sample some of the wild berries you come across.

  5. Feel the textures of nature: From the rough bark of a tree to the smooth petals of a flower, nature offers a variety of textures that can be both interesting and stimulating.

Touch (Tactile) means:  to come in contact with or feel something.

Notice how Bells has her eyes closed in the picture above… it is an added bonus if your child will wear a blindfold or close their eyes while feeling around for something in the bag. We like to close our eyes and then get a surprise.

Your child can spend time touching and looking at the item. They might tell you it’s smooth or bumpy, sharp or soft, blue or green. You can ask questions about what they are feeling. This is a way to use your sense of touch and is great for language development.
