How to Incorporate Notebooking into your Homeschool Day

Ever since I was little I’ve kept journals and notebooks filled with things and thoughts that interested me. So when I began homeschooling years ago I knew that I wanted to share that love with my kids. Whether it was simple nature journals or large notebooks filled with the children’s writings. It didn’t really matter to me. My goal was to introduce homeschool notebooking pages into our day and see how they wanted to use them.

This year we added the Lifetime Membership from NotebookingPages.com and it’s been a great way to enhance learning and create a beautiful portfolio showcasing what they’ve learned.

I’m going to share a few of our favorite ways to incorporate notebooking into our homeschooling.

I am sure every family does it differently. I like to go with the flow and give my children what they enjoy. Some of my kids prefer the coloring pages and pictures more and some prefer to do more writing and draw their own pictures

We have a few different types of homeschool journals going on right now.

One is a nature journal, where we have purchased kids journals and once a week we go on a nature walk or a field trip where they can sit and record what they see. I usually have gone ahead and printed some of the nature notebooking pages out before hand and the children can glue them in when we get home.

We also have a large 2 ring binder filled with page protectors. This is probably one of my favorite notebooking styles because you can just slide your child’s work in as you go. You can have 1 for each child, or make them by themes. Literature, Nature, Handwriting, Geography, Science… The list is endless.

You can also use this style of journaling after a read aloud or after your child has researched something. Just give them a few notebook pages and let them write and illustrate what they remember. This style does very well if you like homeschooling with more of a Charlotte Mason Philosophy.

Keep a list of things that you are studying or some of your children’s interests so you can print out as you go. This way you don’t feel any pressure or get overwhelmed with all of the choices. Notebookingpages.com has thousands of choices. It’s Awesome!!!

Every child at any age can enjoy journaling. For the younger children try giving them pictures to color, alphabet pages and animals. Older kids might like map making, 3-D notebooking and mini books… Very Cool!

Notebooking is also a great way to keep creativity flowing. Get out the colored pencils, glue, and markers. Don’t worry about the clean up, because it will be so worth it.

Each year the children have books they can look back on and remember. They laugh about their drawings and handwriting. Share memories from activities and books we’ve read and smile thinking about how far they have come.

Notebooking and Lapbooking give you freedom to follow rabbit trails with your children. To learn and explore at your (or your child’s pace). They will help your day to run smoothly and boost your child’s confidence.

If you use notebooking or lapbooks as part of your homeschooling I’d love for you to share how it works for you in the comments below. I look forward to hearing from you.
