Being creative allows people to think on their feet and come up with solutions to unexpected problems. As a parent, there are a number of things you can do to encourage creativity in your kids. For small kids, it might be playing dress up or open ended block play. As your kids get older, you might be wondering how you’re going to continue to encourage creativity. Today I am going to share a few great ways to keep your children’s creativity flowing as they get older.

How to Encourage Creativity in Kids

I love finding great things to use as part of our homeschooling that will encourage creativity at any age. Recently we received the Extraodinaires Design Studio case to try out and its been just what my son needed. He has a very creative side, but when it comes to drawing and anything crafty he was lacking confidence. In fact when he first saw it… he said “I stink at drawing.” I told him to give it a try and that sometimes it just takes practicing.

I’m sure some of you have been there before… You know your child can do something, but they are afraid to try? Well I suggest getting something like this that you know your kids will really enjoy doing and it’s a total win for everyone.

Easy Ways to Encourage Creativity in Kids

* Make sure your child has free time during the day to explore new things and be creative.

* Try to create an environment that is calming and allows your child to explore on their own.

* Model Creativity (share things, allow your children in on your hobbies)

* You don’t need tons of toys or crafts to be creative. (Think about investing in a couple of special items and use natural materials).

We picked this because it is great for their imaginations and the creativity process. They will Research, Design, Name their Invention, Doodle, and write in this imaginative kit. With 225 design challenges there is more than enough drawing, critical thinking, and fun for an entire school year. That is just what this child needed.

This was his first picture and he’s already done four more since. In fact he has been asking everyday to do it. Happy Dance 😉 My son is having The Best Time with Extraodinaires Design Studio. I’m so happy we found it at Timberdoodle. It is part of the 5th grade curriculum, but can be purchased by itself too.

Drawing is also something they will become better and better at as they practice. It’s something that allows them to learn new techniques and grow their creativity. It can even become a great career.

Invest in great books that are extremely creative and well written. I’m all for anything that keeps the kids excited about reading.
