Kids love anything that has the tendency to be a little bit messy or just different. And what I love about this fizzy ice experiment is that it’s just really fun to do at home.

Now that the summer is here, we’ve been trying to think up fun Patriotic Science activities that the kids can do, and it’s safe to say that this one is a winner for sure.

And you can even turn this science into a fun science for a space theme fizzing planets activity as well. Just change the shapes and you can use this same recipe over and over again.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment

Supplies Needed:

  • Star ice cube tray or silicone mold (a silicone mold will be easier to remove the stars from), we used this exact one: Ice Cube Shaped Mold
  • Pipettes, droppers… to add the vinegar to the stars
  • About ⅔ cup of baking soda
  • About 2 tablespoons of water
  • Up to 1 cup of vinegar
  • Optional: blue or red food coloring

The amounts needed for this fizzy star recipe will vary based on the size of your star molds and how many stars you would like to make so you can adjust as needed.

For this exact tray, we used about ⅔ of a cup of baking soda and about 2 tablespoons of water to make it into a thick paste.

Be sure to add the water slowly and mix in only enough so it is pliable (if there is too much water the stars will be diluted and won’t fizz as much when you add the active ingredient (vinegar).

Once you’ve made up the mixture, take and push it into the corners of the stars with a toothpick, spatula, or similar pointed item to ensure you have a crips star shape.

This is a great fine motor skill for the kids to work on!

Once the mixture is in the trays, freeze it until it’s solid. This will help remove the stars in a solid piece and keep their shape as is.

Just be aware that they will start to soften right away though so if reusing the tray to make more stars, plan to put the finished stars right back in the freezer until you’re ready to use them. (You might as well make this last as long as possible!
