Alaska has always been something that I’ve found fascinating. The people, the weather, the animals, the beauty of it. Anytime we can watch something on Alaska or explore Alaska through books we’ve tried to do that. So when I got the opportunity to review Aunt Phil’s Trunk Alaska History, I said yes right away.

The thought of learning about the history and culture of Alaska from someone that has spent most of her life living there was super exciting. Plus, you can learn so much from living books. Enjoy!

Laurel Downing Bill was born in Fairbanks Alaska, a third-generation that can trace her roots back to the 1800’s. Laurel Downing Bill loves writing about her state’s history and it shows. By reading through the different volumes and using the workbooks, you can see how much love has gone into the research and the writing.

The idea for Aunt Phil’s Trunk came after her late historian aunt, Phyllis Downing Carlson passed away and left her a trunk filled with articles, stories, research and rare books about Alaska. An idea was born from that trunk, and Laurel Downing Bill has continued to put so much greatness into sharing Alaska’s History with us.

She has truly embraced what a lot of homeschoolers love, and that is learning through books and stories. Real living books that make you feel like you can see what is going on at that time.

Each book in the five-volume series features a different time period in Alaska’s past. The books are full of dozens of short stories and hundreds of historical photographs.

Volume One covers early Alaska up to 1900. It begins with the arrival of Alaska’s Native people and shares stories of Russian occupation, America’s purchase of the Great Land and many explorations and gold rushes.

The different books take you through Volume Five which features 1960 to 1984, the first 25 years of statehood. Some of the stories include the 1964 Good Friday 9.2 earthquake, a giant oil discovery in Prudhoe Bay that led to an 800-mile- long pipeline across Alaska’s wilderness.

Each Volume is a different time period and has it’s own stories that are full of great information.

A Student Workbook and a Teacher Guide (with answers) are now available for each of the five books in the series. The way we have enjoyed this series is to use part of our read-aloud time reading a chapter a day and then talking about what we read. Some days they would enjoy one of the activities or pages of the workbook either while we were reading or right afterward (their choice).

We love that the workbook has a variety of activities:

Map Activities

Discussion Ideas

Word Searches

Crossword Puzzles

Comprehension Questions

Unit Reviews

and more…
