Make Your Own Dinosaur Dig Excavation
What’s Needed:
1 ¼ cup White Non-Sanding Grout – You can use lifecasting powder as a healthier alternative or Plaster of Paris if you prefer it over grout powder.
¾ cup Water
Plastic Wrap
5-6 Small Dinosaurs and Reptiles
Small Plastic Container (approx. 5”x 5”)
Tools for excavation—small hammer, paintbrush, screwdriver, chisel, etc.
Prepare your grout mixture by using the directions on the box; it’s usually just adding water to the mix. Very easy!
Now line the container with a piece of plastic wrap making sure the edges hang over the container. Next, mix the water into the grout and stir until it’s well combined. Pour half the mixture into the container.
A little advice I’ve learned from doing activities like these is to pick up a few containers from the dollar store so I can just toss them afterward and don’t have to deal with any mess. It might cost a few dollars, but it saves a lot of my time and makes my life a lot easier.
Lay your dinosaurs and reptiles into the grout mixture and pour the rest of the grout mixture into the container so that the toys are completely covered. Let this excavation activity harden for at least 24 hours or until it’s completely dry.
Finally, pop it out of the container, remove the plastic wrap and it’s ready for play.
Have your children use child-size tools to chip away the grout and excavate the dinosaurs and reptiles.
This is a perfect dinosaur activity for a dinosaur birthday party or dinosaur theme for kids. You can even make this homemade geology dig kit into a fantastic gift for kids.
