The Best Harry Potter Party Ideas and Printables

Recently, our family has become obsessed with Harry Potter. We started reading the books aloud this year and decided we would have a family movie night every couple of weeks to watch the movies. The kids were immediately hooked on Harry Potter.

The kids run through the woods and play games, acting like wizards; they have created their own potions and spell books for fun. So when it came time to think of birthday party ideas, it was easy to pick the theme. I hope you enjoy these awesome Harry Potter Party Ideas and Printables as much as we did.

Planning a Harry Potter party for kids is a magical adventure that doesn’t have to be complicated! Start by transforming your space into Hogwarts with simple touches like floating candles (paper cutouts hung from the ceiling), house banners made from colored poster board, and a “Platform 9¾” photo backdrop using a brick-pattern tablecloth taped to a wall.

Sort guests into houses with a fun Sorting Hat ceremony using an old witch’s hat or get the actual sorting hat, like we did, and name cards drawn randomly, then let kids build and design their own wands using sticks or dowels, hot glue, and paint. We’ve shared pictures and materials lists with examples below.

Keep them entertained with games like a scavenger hunt for “magical ingredients,” a Quidditch-inspired relay race with hula hoops as goals, or a potions station where they mix colorful (and edible!) concoctions using fruit juices and dry ice for a spooky fog effect.

Check out the simple yet fun potions station below.

For food, serve “butterbeer” (cream soda with butterscotch syrup and whipped cream), chocolate frogs made from molded chocolate, and themed snacks labeled with clever names like “Mandrake Roots” (carrot sticks) or “Golden Snitches” (cheese balls). You can find Harry Potter Recipes Here and Here.

Wrap up the party with a cake designed like the Hogwarts crest or Sorting Hat and send guests home with small favor bags containing candy, a mini wand, or a “spellbook” notebook, so many easy touches that make the whole celebration feel enchanted without breaking the bank or requiring too much prep time.

Have fun!
