Helpful Tips for Moms with Migraines

Men, women, children – migraine knows no bounds. According to Migraine Research Foundation, 36 million Americans suffer from migraines. Did you know that migraines affect three times as many women than men? That is why today I wanted to share a story with you from my life and a few helpful tips that might come in handy for you.

I never realized how bad migraines could actually be. When I was growing up my mom used to get terrible migraines and stay in bed half the day with the lights out and a cloth on her head. At that point, honestly all I could think of is “I never want to get old”. Of course now I realize age has nothing to do with it and guess what, sometimes I get migraines now. Ugh! Thankfully, I only get a few a year and Excedrin® Migraine always does the trick.

I absolutely love staying at home with my kids, but when you have a migraine it’s hard to play and take care of parenting children when all you want to do is lay down. That is why I think it’s really important to be honest with your children. Make sure you tell them how you are feeling and have a “mommy migraine kit” prepared. childrens toys books

One thing that helped me a lot growing up was how open and honest my mom was. I knew when I saw her in pain it was a migraine and I needed to be extra quiet and extra helpful. As I got older my mom also is the one that told me Excedrin® Migraine was the only thing that took the pain away. She knows that I always try natural techniques first, but in the end you have to go with what will work for you. If you are a mom that gets terrible headaches or migraines there are a few things you should definitely do.

  1. Have a basket with books, puzzles or other quiet activities that your children enjoy doing handy. The last thing you’ll feel like doing is planning things while your head hurts.
  2. Make sure your children know age appropriate practical life skills. You know we love how Maria Montessori stressed that practical life skills builds self esteem in children. It will help you if they can get their own snack; get dressed by themselves; go to the bathroom without a problem. You’ll thank me for this one day 😉
  3. Keep what you need handy: Your Mommy Migraine Kit could include, Excedrin® Migraine, warm cloth and lots of water.
  4. Know your body. Stress and hormones (among other things) can trigger headaches, so taking care of yourself is important.
  5. Enjoy cuddle time. One of my all time favorite moments are cuddling up with the kids and just relaxing.
