A Montessori Inspired Approach to Nature Study

Children naturally gravitate towards nature and crave a connection with the natural world. A Montessori approach to education helps facilitate your children’s natural inclinations and curiosity by putting the ball in their court. Helping children preserve their wonder and connection with the natural world isn’t always easy though.

Richard Louv, American author and winner of the Audobon Medal for environmental conservation, famously said “We cannot protect something we do not love, we cannot love what we do not know, and we cannot know what we do not see. And touch. And hear.” If this is true, then part of our journey in pursuing a Montessori education is to educate our children about the natural world and cultivate a love for nature in even our youngest learners.

In Spring, Summer, and even Fall, connecting with nature isn’t difficult. The weather is usually pleasant and exploring the great outdoors feels more manageable. In Winter, it is cold, there might be snow, and that’s to say nothing of all the time you’ll spend bundling everyone up for a trip outdoors.

However, a Montessori-inspired approach to nature study is still possible, even in Winter. I’ve put together a unit study all about holly to help you get started. This holly unit study is filled with opportunities to cultivate wonder and curiosity about the natural world with your children this season.

Holly: A Winter Preschool and Kindergarten Theme

Holly trees are popular at this time of year throughout Europe and North America. These beautiful evergreen trees produce bright red berries that are easily identifiable. Since children will likely see holly outdoors as well as in seasonal decorations, it’s a great place to begin exploring nature with your preschoolers this Winter.

Plus, holly and holly berries lend themselves to all kinds of fun Winter activities with children! From counting berries to holiday crafting, lots of history, and fun books like The Holly King and The Oak King by J. C. Artemisia, there’s a lot to learn about holly!

Did you know holly was a big part of the Winter Solstice celebrations in Ancient Rome? The Ancient Romans believed holly was the god, Saturn’s, sacred plant and that it would protect them from lightning strikes.

Holly was also important in Celtic lore where it was seen as a symbol of peace and goodwill, a sacred tree used to ward off “evil spirits.”

In this Montessori Inspired Holly Unit Study, you and your children can explore the physical aspects of holly and holly berries while practicing important early learning skills too.

Check out what’s included in this holly unit study:

Montessori 3 Part Cards

Also known as nomenclature cards, this activity is a staple of the Montessori method, and for good reason. Montessori 3 part cards help children make associations between objects and words, help them to identify new items, and make connections.

In this printable holly unit study, I’ve included a colorful set of Montessori 3 part cards featuring holly flowers, holly berries, seeds, saplings, and adult trees. It’s the perfect way to introduce your children to the life cycle of a holly tree too.

On that note, I’ve added a printable holly life cycle diagram and a great cut and paste activity you can use to practice identifying the stages of the holly life cycle with your kids this Winter too. It’s a great way to explore the natural world with children, even if you’re stuck indoors.

Holly Coloring Pages

In this holly unit study, you’ll get two custom coloring pages featuring holly leaves and berries too. These coloring pages are lots of fun for kids, but they’re great for building early learning skills too. Coloring helps kids explore colors, self-expression, and build important fine motor skills and concentration.

Then, keep building fine motor skills for early handwriting with the “H is for Holly” dot marker page and handwriting practice pages with tracing opportunities and lined spaces for writing practice too.

Poetry and Writing Prompts

In addition to handwriting practice pages and copy work, I’ve included poetry and fun writing prompt for more advanced learners too. Emily Bronte’s Love and Friendship poem feature references to holly that will make your children think and help them make connections between emotions and nature too.

Then, encourage children to write about how the poem makes them feel or create their own poetry on the included writing prompt page. It’s a fun activity that’s a perfect introduction to poetry for your kids this winter.
