These are perfect alphabet sensory play activities for kids learning the alphabet and upper and lowercase letter recognition. We are true believers in hands-on activities for early childhood learning. It’s the best!

This is also a really fun activity to do at the beach, so if you are going to the beach take a sharpie along in your beach bag and create a super cool shell matching activity right where you’re sitting.

Seashell Sensory Bin for an Ocean Theme

After gathering your supplies, you’ll want to fill your container with sand as much as you would like. They sell bags of sand at any hardware store or Walmart.

Letter Matching Activities

Write each letter of the alphabet in upper case on a shell and each letter in lower case on a shell.

Pick out about 6 to 10 sets of the lettered shells and bury them in the sand. You can put more or fewer sets of letters depending on how challenging you would like it to be.

An optional step would be to add other beachy items to your sensory bin if you would like. We like to switch it up and do both letter finds, sometimes with other ocean theme objects and sometimes we only use the shells.

Now your child can dig for letter matches, or you can make it a little more challenging for children that can spell words. Try having your child dig for shells to spell simple words.

What’s Needed

1 Small Clear Plastic Container
52 Seashells, assort. Sizes and Colors (find them at the Dollar Tree if you don’t have any)
Sand
Black Permanent Marker

Directions

1. Write each letter of the alphabet in upper case on a shell and each letter in lower case on a shell.
2. Fill your container with sand as much as you would like.
3. Pick out about 9 or 10 sets of the lettered shells and bury them in the sand. You can put more or less sets of letters depending on how difficult you would like it to be.
4. An optional step would be to add other beachy items to your sensory bin if you would like.
5. Now just dig for letter matches, or for more difficulty, have your child dig for shells to spell words.
