While books might be the first thing you think of when it comes to education, there’s something very inviting about literature based learning. 5 Reasons to Love Literature Based Homeschool Curriculum

1. Quality Time

Literature based learning may mean that you’re taking a bit more time to teach your kids, but it’s quality time well spent. Reading aloud to your children from books that reflect your beliefs, morals, and ideas of various subjects helps to create that quality time with your kids. Growing your relationship with your children by spending time together curled up hooked into a great book. This quality time will help encourage your kids to have the desire to read more.

2. Learning What Life Was Like

With literature based learning the kids are soaking in what life was like during the period you are reading aloud or having them read. Books free up the imagination to envision what was going on during a particular period or event. Rather than memorizing various names, events, and important dates, the kids get into learning what life was like through living books. Reading helps bring pictures into their minds.

Why we Love Using Literature Based Learning

I wanted to share a little story, so you understand where I’m coming from and why I feel the way I do. I’ll start by saying I don’t think you have to purchase a full curriculum to enjoy literature based homeschooling. You can build your home library or gather resources and books for themed units. All of these are great options, do what’s best for your family. 🙂

I share our love for Sonlight because I bought our first Sonlight curriculum 11 years ago and to this day we still love everything about Sonlight. Whether it’s the new books we are introduced to every year, the top quality materials, or the memories we make gathered around our sun room reading, I’ll always believe a big part of our homeschool success is due to Sonlight.

If you still aren’t sure about using Literature Based Homeschool Curriculum here are a few more facts for you. 🙂

3. Retain More Information

It is often shown (in studies) that kids who are taught in a literature based learning style will retain more information. Since you are utilizing various forms of literature to engage your child’s mind, they are more likely to have a higher interest level and retain more. Kids are free to envision what life was like for the historical figure they are reading about or perhaps envision what the geography was like during a period – this imagination fueled learning encourages kids to retain that education better. Also being free to read and research their topics gives them the opportunity to learn about whatever interests them.

4. More Engagement

Rather than being tested on what the kids have memorized in a book, they can listen to you read aloud, read by themselves, or even read to their siblings. This improves communication skills and learning how to work with others. More engagement in your family means more learning for the kids as a whole. Yay!

5. Homeschooling Multiple Ages and Children at One Time

I love being able to teach multiple children that are different ages at the same time. Instead of having to purchase four different curriculums or different levels, we can have all four of our homeschooling children working together at times. The older boys do their own thing too, but not having to worry about 4 different plans for mom (me) is fabulous. Plus, It’s great being able to spend time learning together.

When you’re using literature based learning, you are opening the doors to so many benefits for your kids and your family. These are just a few reasons why we love using Literature Based Homeschool Curriculum. What do you use? I’d love to hear about your favorite teaching methods.
