Sunflower Life Cycle For Kindergarten and Kids of All Ages
Sunflowers have an interesting life cycle with seven stages. Exploring the sunflower life cycle together is a great way to teach your kids all about observation, stages in the life cycle, and the natural world.
Do you have any sunflowers nearby? If so, this would be a great time to visit them.
Spend time observing these tall flowers and talking about what you see. Children will build strong observation skills while learning about sunflowers in a hands-on way.
Then, use the printable sunflower life cycle for kindergarteners, included in this printable sunflower lesson plan, to help your kids identify, label, and sequence the different stages in the sunflower life cycle.

All About Sunflowers Unit Study Material
Along with the sunflower life cycle, there are other opportunities for kindergartners to explore science using sunflowers.
Try planting your own sunflower seeds and watching them grow. It’s a great way to experience the sunflower’s life cycle firsthand!
Also, kids can learn about what makes plants grow and how to care for a garden.

Sunflower Coloring Pages
Included in this printable Montessori sunflower unit study, you’ll find two sunflower coloring pages for your kindergartners to enjoy. Coloring is fun for kids on a rainy day or keeping little hands busy during read alouds.
Plus, coloring is an excellent way for children to build fine motor skills and concentration. As they work to fill in the shapes on the pages, they build finger muscles, practice pencil grasping, and make the pre-writing strokes they’ll use to form letters and numbers later.

Sunflower Seed Art

Exploring Van Gogh’s Sunflowers
Van Gogh is one of the world’s most famous painters. He’s best known for creating emotional works that feel personal. You can learn about Van Gogh with your kindergartners in the book Van Gogh and the Sunflowers by Laurence Anholt. His sunflower painting is one of his most famous.
Once you’ve learned about Van Gogh and his sunflowers, try recreating your own version of his masterpiece at home with your kids.

Sunflower STEAM Project
Finally, you’ll love this sunflower STEAM project. STEAM projects combine science, technology, engineering, art, and math. You can add this fun STEAM sunflower activity to your unit study for all kinds of learning fun.
For this sunflower STEAM activity, you’ll need green pipe cleaners, homemade playdough, and sunflower seeds. You’ll be using these simple tools to create your own 3D sunflower sculptures. Check out this homemade playdough recipe to use with this project and others.
First, form a circle for the center of your sunflower and several petals using the playdough. Then, make a stem and leaves using pipe cleaners. Once you’ve attached the stem, leaves, center, and petals, fill in the center using your sunflower seeds.
Each child’s sunflower STEAM project will look a bit different, and that’s okay. No two sunflowers look the same in nature, after all.
Talk about the elements all sunflowers share using what you’ve learned with my printable Montessori sunflower unit study as a guide.
