How to Teach About Birds
Bird Unit Study
The best place to start teaching kids about birds is to get outdoors and observe the birds in their natural habitat. While you are bird watching discuss the birds with your kids. Chances are your kids will be so intrigued by the outdoor habits of birds that they’ll ask a lot of questions.
If your kids need some guidance for things to think about during your bird observation time, consider asking some of the following questions:
What do birds eat?
What type of sounds does each bird make?
How do birds make their nests?
What are the different colors you see on each bird?
How do birds move?
Montessori Bird Activities
The best part of homeschooling is that you can do a lot of self-guided unit studies. During your bird unit study be sure to create a bird journal. This will be a pad of paper with questions and blank pages to help your kids draw and write what they see during their outdoor observations and study sessions.
There are many ways you can include hands-on activities in your bird unit study. Have the kids make birdhouses that you can put outdoors to attract more local birds. You can use the birdhouse craft session as part of your education about what type of homes and outdoor places can be a safe space for birds to sleep, and provide shelter for their babies.
Make bird feeders and bird treats as you discuss the different varieties of birds that your kids noticed during your outdoor bird observation time. They can document these notes within their bird journal and then go outdoors to put the bird feeders and bird houses up in a location that is best for each species of bird based on your researched discussions.
