How Does Reading Help a Child’s Intellectual Development

Shape and Color Recognition

When you read to your child during their early learning age, such as newborn through toddler years, they start to recognize shapes and colors. With storybooks that have many pictures and textures, the child begins to notice what shapes and colors are simply from the act of you reading to them while they sit on your lap. This builds your child’s intellectual side as they remember shapes and colors without much pressure to learn.

Word Recognition

As your child grows and you’ve read to them on a regular basis, they’ll start to recognize new words, and as they begin to talk, their word usage may be advanced. Many children who’ve grown up with a parent who reads to them on a regular basis have a more full range of word usage than a child who isn’t introduced to reading at an early age. Reading helps a child’s brain retain more options for word usage as they upgrade to a variety of books.

Problem Solving Skills

You can encourage problem-solving skills with children through the act of reading books. Reading a wide range of books helps your child’s intellectual development as they learn how to solve problems based on what the characters in a book are experiencing. You’ll notice that even toddler books offer an issue that must be resolved by the time the book is over. This is a subtle way to encourage kids to develop a stronger set of problem-solving skills to use later in life.

Metacognitive Knowledge

This refers to the skill of being able to think about your own thinking. Reading helps expand a child’s knowledge of what they’re thinking and how to have stronger skills in the area of knowing what they feel and think about a situation. This metacognitive knowledge base is best taught through reading as your child learns to think through the storyline and what each character is going through. Reading helps expands your child’s ability to think a situation entirely through so that when they do make a decision or discuss the reading material, they’ll be sharing something that comes from deep within their mind.
