How to Set Up a Reading Nook Kids Love – Plus DIY Rain Gutter Bookshelf
If you are an avid reader, passionate about books and hope your children have the same passion, setting up a reading nook will do wonders. I’m sure you’ve been swept away to far off places, had amazing adventures and felt the emotions from a great book before. We all want our children to feel those things too. I want to share how we are filling our house with a lifestyle of learning one little corner at a time 🙂 Today we are sharing how to set up a reading nook kids love.

Children’s Reading Corner
Comfy Kids Reading Nook
All kids need is a cozy place to curl up with a good book. This space I’m sharing here is a corner in our sun room a.k.a. Homeschool room.
The first step to creating a reading nook is figuring out where you want it. I’ve seen people transform closets, under the stairs areas, and corners of rooms (of course 😉
Put thought into what your children like. Do they like to sit in chairs, lounge around on pillows, or do they prefer a more closed in space? Adding a canopy or teepee gives a wonderful feeling of their own hidden space.
Use simple kids artwork, maps, and book quotes for decoration. My husband and I have found a few gorgeous maps to hang in this space, but this Little Passports map has been with us throughout our homeschooling days and has so much meaning for the kids we just can’t switch it out. Plus, it’s perfect for kids!
Make Books Easily Accessible
Keeping books in baskets, on low bookshelves, and open facing shelves are perfect for children of all ages.
You can find some of our favorite books here and here.

Add in a Few Favorite Book Buddies
The Book Buddy Basket is a favorite with kids. They love to pull out their favorite animal (of the day) and read. Sometimes they get them all out, but I don’t mind at all. Whatever gets them reading and enjoying books is what’s important to us.

Rain Gutter Bookshelf
These are so easy to put up and inexpensive. I’ve been asked about our rain gutter shelves several times and wanted to share an easy how to instructions, even though I don’t have any how to pictures. Unfortunately, I didn’t think about taking pictures as we were putting them up.
The first thing is measuring your space. We used 2 plastic 12 ft. Rain Gutters for what you see here.
Although you don’t need any fancy equipment for this, an electric screwdriver would be best for installation.
We used an old fashioned hand saw to cut the pieces to size. However, if you have measured ahead of time, most hardware stores will cut them to size for you.
I purchased the end caps for all of the ends because I prefer that look (my opinion of course). However, I have heard of people sanding down the edges and just leaving them as is. – Personally, the extra $16 was worth it.
You’ll also want to purchase the right screws to use on your wall/shelves. We screwed the shelf in approximately every 14 in.
The corner pieces are optional depending on your space. These worked perfectly to wrap around the rain gutter shelves and add extra space.
To give you an example of what we have shown in our reading nook and the cost of it:
We have two 4 ft shelves and four 3 ft. shelves
The total for everything including a new level was $50
We have been so happy with these shelves and they make a great reading nook kids can enjoy forever.
Don’t Forget to Fill Your Space with Great Books
This book Nature Anatomy is from one of our favorite series. They are beautiful books filled with inspiration.
More Great Books
Pick books that your children love, that you loved when you were a child and themed books. Switch them out every few weeks to add freshness and excitement to your kids reading nook.
Don’t forget children learn from what you do, so read to them regularly and let them see you reading 🙂
