Solar System Unit Study Part 1

Share Button
Here is your first peek into our month long Solar System unit study. We started this unit out with reading one of our favorite series The Magic Tree House. We read Midnight on the Moon and Space. I always try to incorporate some of the boys favorite books into our learning so it keeps them excited and wanting to read more. Unit studies can be such a great way to learn.

Solar System Unit Study

Come along for a journey through Space.
I had several different set-ups for this Unit Study, this was the first one. As you can see we were able to get several books from the library to set out. The moon art work on the windows can be found by clicking here. We did a fabulous Moon phases study .
I printed out several amazing Solar System games, puzzles and worksheets from education.com. They have a great selection and it was easy for me to select age appropriate activities. For instance Little B made his own Solar System book, while my older boys researched all about the differences and worked on a crossword puzzle.
Hard at work, and loving it.

An out of this world snack.. Who knew eating the planets could be so healthy.  If you are interested in how to make this snack click here. I made my own version from what I had in the fridge.

I decided it would be fun to take some time to learn outside. After learning about the planets, they drew the Sun, rings, and the  planets themselves.

They are all  proud of themselves, they did a great job and had a lot of fun learning.

Learning about Constellations

We choose to have fun with marshmallows and try to make some of the constellations ourselves.

I thought it would be fun to set up a little Solar System play in the largest bathroom we have(yes, of course you can do this in any room of the house, however all of our rooms were to bright during the day). This worked out perfect for us. I strung Christmas lights around the room and floor, I set out our homemade light box, used the Glow in the dark stars and planet kit, along with the Safari Space Toob set and the kids played all afternoon. Even the dog enjoyed watching.
If you enjoyed this part of our Unit Study I would love for you to Like us on Facebook and check out the great ideas I’ve shared on Pinterest.
Be sure to join us for part 2. Where we made the planets ourselves, had a great Sensory play, examined a huge space ship, and so much more. Plus see what the kids thought of my favorite part of learning the Solar System when I was a little girl.
and
PEACE on Earth!
