26 Things Every Special Needs Mom Needs to Know

Share Button

I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot lately. My plan was to write a letter to my son telling him all of the things I wish he knew, but instead all of this stuff I wish I knew kept popping in my head. So I decided to share some things that I wish I had read when I was 18 with my first son. A letter to all of the young moms out there that have children with special needs.

26 Things Every Special Needs Mom Needs to Know

I wish you knew that you can do this.

That you are stronger than you think (thank you Winnie the Pooh).

That everything will be alright and one day all of these moments that seem so tough will just be a memory.

I wish you knew that feeling depressed sometimes or robbed of “normal kid stuff” is very normal.

I wish you would trust yourself to make the best decisions for your child and not get swayed by others.

I wish you would spend less time worrying and more time enjoying life.

I wish you would realize that you know your child better than anyone else ever will.

That spending an hour crying on the bathroom floor is okay once in a while.

I wish you knew that you’re not alone in this.

That other children hit, have fits, don’t play with others, can’t read when people expect them to, have anxiety, put everything in their mouth, take off running, don’t sit still, need medical care. The list goes on and on

I wish you knew it is okay to take care of yourself. You’ll feel so much better when you have a little bit of “me time” and come back refreshed.

I wish you knew not to compare your child to others.

I wish you knew that some people are clueless and will never actually “Get it.” That’s okay; you don’t need their advice.

I wish you knew that putting your marriage and your spouse first is okay sometimes and very important.

I wish you knew how much of a helper you are. Parenting a child with special needs is hard, and you probably will spend most of your days helping others.

I wish you knew how hard it’s going to be dealing with people that think your child lacks discipline because he looks “normal” on the outside.

I wish I could give you a hug for every time you had to deal with the word normal.

I wish I could warn you about how many times you’ll have to explain why you don’t force your child to eat meals with everyone. Or why you don’t force your child to try different foods.

I wish I could tell you the worrying will go away, but it never goes away no matter how old your child is.

I wish I could tell you that family and friends will always understand why you can’t come to certain functions, but they won’t. Some people just don’t know.

I can tell you that it gets easier dealing with people as time goes on.

I can tell you that every time your child smiles at you or gives you a hug it is the best feeling ever.

I can tell you that no matter what the professionals think, you know your child the best and can be the best advocate for them.

I can tell you that you are amazing. You’re amazing for putting someone else needs first all of the time.

I can tell you that the times when you feel lonely or sorry for yourself can be times turned into meditation and relaxation.

I hope you know that one day your child will know and understand who’s always been there for them and that person is you.

Great job mama.
