Time Management Secrets Tips Every Homeschooling Mom Should Know

It is exciting to share our love for homeschooling, our homeschool journey and hopefully, tips that will help your family.

I won’t take too much of your time up, but these time management tips have to be shared. Let’s get started!

Focus on Priorities

We can’t do everything at all times. Often homeschooling moms want to get everything done and will take on more than they should. Learn to focus on priorities each day. Taking one priority at a time will help you succeed with time management skills during your day to day life.

There is a fun little phrase called an M.I.T – Most Important Task

I use this phrase daily for homeschooling, housekeeping and in business. Pick one thing each day (your single most important thing) for each major category of your life and do that thing first. If you get it done, it’s a win for the day.

An example of my daily M.I.T.  would look like:

  • Reading
  • Clean Kitchen
  • 30 Minute walk outside with kids or fun activity
  • Check Emails or write

For me when the M.I.T. is complete I’m thrilled and I know I completed important things for our day.

Teach Subjects with Multiple Children

The joy of being a homeschooling mom is that you can teach subjects as a group. Subjects like History, Bible, Literature, and Science are perfect subjects to work together on. One of the reasons we love using Sonlight and The Good and The Beautiful so much is we can work together.

We gather around the dining room table or sprawl out in our sunroom for several subjects a day. It’s very relaxing and gives us a lot of flexibility in our days. When you can incorporate learning together in your homeschooling, you’ll have more time to focus on other fun things to do as a family.

Set Reasonable Goals

You’ll not only want to set priorities and try to teach subject jointly but the best time management tip I can lend to homeschooling moms is to set reasonable goals. You will never be able to manage the time in your day if you have unattainable goals on your daily to-do list. Remember you’ve got this, you’re doing a fantastic job. Your kids are getting enough done, and if you stress less about what’s not getting done and focus on the amazing things you’re doing, your whole family will be happier.

Get Organized

As a homeschooling mom, you’ll work best when the house is organized. Try to maintain some level of organization in your daily life to include the household duties as well as your classroom area. When everything in your home has a proper place and stays there, you’ll become more efficient.

If your children seem to make a mess during their free time every day, have a 5 minute clean up time every evening. It’s amazing what everyone in the family can get done in 5 minutes when you work together (even two-year-olds can help pick up).

Using organization and planning resources is also a great way to maximize your time and stay on task.

Start Meal Planning

Simple meals or planning meals ahead of time will surely save you ample time in your day. Learn how to meal plan with simple meals, or prepare ahead of time meals that allow you to have free time to focus on other areas of your homeschooling day. The Instant Pot and Crock Pots are enormous time savers and a must for us homeschooling mamas.

Have a Daily Routine

Establishing a daily routine can take a little time at first, but once you find a daily rhythm that works for you, everyone will be so happy.

This will help your children know what comes next and will help you feel a sense of peace and calm in your day. I encourage you to think about how your days usually flow. You’ll probably be surprised that there is already some established routine without even trying. Routine can be important for your family and to managing as a homeschool mom.

Delegate Tasks

Consider having your spouse or older children get involved in other household duties, including meal prep and cooking. When you learn to let go of having to take control of anything and everything in the house, you’ll find that a huge block of time and energy is freed up.

Independent learning is also a WONDERFUL way to free up time for you and get your children working on their own. See how you can work independent learning into your days here.

Being a homeschooling mom surely has its day to day challenges, and you have to remain on top of your teaching game. Each of the tips I shared today for time management should surely help you become the most efficient and productive homeschooling mom ever. Good Luck!
