I’ve been waiting a year to enjoy these activities with Bells. I wanted her to be able to understand what Hibernation and Migration meant and differentiate between the two. I’m so glad we waited because Preschool and Kindergarten age children are the perfect age to start lessons like these.
Teaching pages are quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and I hope you love them, too. I find them great because you don’t need a book or any notes to share the information with the children. Now, I know some of you might be able to do everything from your brain, but when I’m working with kids of all ages and moving from Geometry to reading comprehension to a preschool theme, it makes it a lot easier if I have the info to share right there.

Winter Topics for Preschool
This Hibernate or Migrate printable is a great cut and glue page for kids. They work on their fine motor skills and comprehension skills based on what they are learning. They can also color the pictures of the animals. 🙂
I know you’ll love some of these if you are looking for great Animals in Winter Books.

Teaching Preschoolers About Hibernation, Migration, and Other Winter Adaptations
Winter is fascinating, especially when learning how animals adapt to the cold. Teaching preschoolers about hibernation, migration, and other winter adaptations can be fun and educational.
Here are some engaging ways to introduce these concepts to young learners.
Hibernation
Hibernation is a state of deep sleep that some animals enter to survive the cold months when food is scarce.
Here are a few activities to help preschoolers understand this concept:
- Story Time: Read books about hibernation, such as Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. Discuss how the bear and other animals prepare for winter.
- Pretend Play: Create a cozy “den” in the classroom with blankets and pillows. Let the children pretend to be bears, getting ready to hibernate. They can gather “food” (stuffed animals or play food) and snuggle into their den.
- Crafts: Make a hibernation craft where children can create a bear in a cave using paper plates, construction paper, and cotton balls for snow.
Migration
Migration is the seasonal movement of animals from one region to another. Birds and butterflies are common examples of animals that migrate to warmer areas during winter. Here are some ways to teach this concept:
- Interactive Map: Use a world map to show where different animals migrate. For example, trace the journey of monarch butterflies from North America to Mexico.
- Songs and Rhymes: Sing songs about migration, such as “The Birds Fly South for the Winter.” Incorporate hand movements to mimic flying.
- Bird Watching: If possible, take the children on a nature walk to observe birds. Discuss which birds stay and which ones migrate.
Winter Adaptations
Many animals have unique adaptations to survive the winter. Some grow thicker fur, change color, or store food. Here are some activities to explore these adaptations:
- Animal Dress-Up: Provide costumes or props representing different animals and their winter adaptations. For example, a white scarf for a snowshoe hare that turns white in winter.
- Science Experiment: Conduct a simple experiment to show how blubber keeps animals warm. Fill two ziplock bags with vegetable shortening (blubber) and place one inside another empty bag. Let children put their hands in the “blubber glove” and then into ice water to feel how it insulates.
- Matching Game: Create a matching game with pictures of animals and their winter adaptations. For example, match a squirrel with acorns, a polar bear with thick fur, and a rabbit with white fur.
Combining Concepts for Learning
To reinforce learning, consider combining all three concepts into a single activity:
- Winter Animal Diorama: Have the children create a diorama that includes animals that hibernate, migrate, and adapt in other ways. Use shoe boxes, clay, and craft supplies to build scenes of bears in dens, birds flying south, and rabbits in snowy landscapes.
Discussion and Reflection
Finally, engage the children in a discussion about what they have learned.
Ask questions like:
- “Why do some animals sleep all winter?”
- “Where do birds go when it gets cold?”
- “How do animals stay warm in the snow?”
These activities teach preschoolers about hibernation, migration, and winter adaptations and foster a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world. By making learning interactive and fun, you can help young children develop a lifelong interest in science and nature.
