How to Make a Yarn Heart Paper Plate Craft

This is an example of what you will need to make your Heart Craft Project. However, I have it displayed in list form towards the bottom of the page. Optional: Add a large child sewing needle if your child is over 3.

*Start by cutting a heart out of the middle of each paper plate. Make sure you leave about a half inch around the heart on the flat part of the plate for the threading. I cut my first heart out of one plate and used that as a template on my second plate.

A little tip – you might want to have these prepared beforehand if you are working with several children at one time.

Now take the hole punch and punch holes around the entire heart. Only leave a tiny space in between each hole, so that you will have a lot of holes.

If you set up a specific tray or craft area for your child you can have a few plates already prepared, yarn and a child-friendly sewing needle ready for them to create whenever they want. However, I do recommend supervising children when they are using a sewing needle.

My daughter has loved this beginner sewing Valentine Craft activity. She’s made 4 or 5 different colored paper plate hearts now, and I told her that she could hand them out for Valentine’s Day if she wants. She’s so excited!

When I first saw the yarn heart from I Heart Crafty Things I knew it would be a fun fine motor activity for my kids. I wanted to add a little to it and make it work as a craft and a fun lesson and beginning sewing activity.

Easy Beginner Sewing for Kids

Sewing with a young child doesn’t have to be complicated. Today, you’ll see a simple way to sew with a Preschooler (Toddler or Kindergartner) that you can do with a paper plate. Whether you start simple and have them thread the yarn through the holes with their fingers or you use a safe child-friendly sewing needle, the results are lovely.

Plus, not only does your child end up with a lovely Yarn Paper Plate Heart Craft but they are using their concentration, fine motor skills, and imagination to do it.

Your child should practice weaving the end of the yarn in and out of the holes. When they have used all of the holes or feel their project is complete, you can tie the two ends into a knot in the back or use a small piece of tape to stick the yarn onto the plate.

Using a Multicolor Yarn or doing 2-3 different colored yarns (we did both) gives you a really pretty heart at the end.

This Yarn Paper Plate Heart Craft was the perfect activity for our cold winter days. Bells loved picking out her yarn colors for her Valentine sewing; plus, shopping with mommy is always fun 😉

You can have a lot of fun with these pretty weaved hearts. Hang them around the house for decoration, give them away as Valentine cards, or enjoy them yourself.

Yarn Heart Paper Plate Craft

What’s Needed

Skein Pink Yarn or any color you like best
Skein Purple Yarn or any color you like best
Medium Paper Plates, white and pink
Hole Punch
Scissors
Tape
Optional: Child Friendly Sewing Needle

Directions

1. Cut a heart out of the middle of each paper plate. Make sure you leave about a half inch around the heart on the flat part of the plate. I cut my first heart out of one plate and used that as a template on my second plate.

2. Now, take the hole punch and punch holes around the entire heart. Only leave a tiny space in between each hole, so that you will have a lot of holes.

3. Take a very long piece of yarn, mine was about 3-4 yards because I didn’t want to run out part way through. With the plate’s, right side up put one end of the yarn through a hole and tape it to the back side of the plate.

4. Take the other end of the yarn and start threading it through the holes back and forth. You can do it in a pattern or just anywhere, as long as you make sure you go through each hole one time.

5. Once you’ve gone through every hole, finish with the yarn going through a hole to the back of the plate, tape it, and trim off any excess yarn.
