This is an important time for developing healthy habits. Healthy eating and an active lifestyle are very important for your child’s growth and development.
Eat the Rainbow Activity
The Eat the Rainbow activity is an exciting and educational way to introduce toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners to nutrition. This engaging activity encourages children to explore a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables, making healthy eating fun and visually appealing.

For toddlers, the activity can be a sensory adventure. They can touch, smell, and taste different produce, learning about textures and flavors. Simple tasks like sorting fruits and vegetables by color can help develop their fine motor skills and color recognition.
Preschoolers can take the activity further by learning the names of different fruits and vegetables and understanding that different colors often mean different nutrients. They can participate in fun games like creating a rainbow on their plate or matching foods to a colorful chart, which can enhance their cognitive and language skills.
Kindergarteners can delve deeper into the nutritional benefits of eating a variety of colors. They can learn that red fruits and vegetables often contain antioxidants, while green ones are rich in vitamins and minerals.
Activities like this farmer’s market scavenger hunt, crafting a rainbow salad or sorting colorful foods can make learning interactive and memorable.

We made it easy and cut out colored felt pieces to use with our activities. If you don’t have felt, don’t worry. In the free printable pack below, I give you color cards that go with the foods. So, for these fun nutrition activities, we talked about different foods and sorted them out by color.
You can use the food pictures in the pack or find food pictures in magazines and cut them out together. This week, we also spent time reading farm and food books.

This cutie pie loved sorting fruits and vegetables.
Preschool Sorting Activities

You can help children learn food groups by sorting your wooden or felt play foods. I like doing it this way, so the activities have more of a hands-on feel; however, using the food group pictures works fine, too. This Melissa and Doug food group set features items from the five food groups and works perfectly for such activities.

We are big fans of alphabet clip cards here, so I included healthy eating alphabet cards. Your child is sure to love clipping these fruits and Vegetables. Yum!
