How To Do a No Spend Challenge Month

First, set yourself up for a successful no spend challenge month. If you know there’s an upcoming purchase you’ll need to make, go ahead and take care of it before your no spend challenge begins. However, be careful not to go overboard with this kind of preparatory spending. That would defeat the point of the no spend challenge month.

Commit to only making necessary purchases. You will still need to pay your bills and buy gas and food. However, you can limit food and gas expenses by committing to use the items in your pantry, meal planning, and avoiding impulse buys at the grocery store.

You can also limit gas expenses by thinking about your driving habits and trying to cut back on unnecessary travel.

Second, make a plan for your challenge. Decide how long your challenge will last. Some people have decided to do an entire no spend year! For your first no spend challenge, I recommend starting with a 30 day challenge. Plan what you will do during your no spend challenge month.

There are plenty of fun things to do with your family that are free. Planning these fun activities can help motivate you to complete the challenge.

Fun Things to Do During a No Spend Challenge

There are many free fun things to do with your family during a no spend challenge month. You can find out what’s going on locally with Facebook, your city’s webpage, the newspaper, or a visit to the library. Some neighborhoods even have mom groups or neighborhood websites and newsletters filled with ideas.

Here are some of our favorites from the list:

  • Go on a bike ride around your neighborhood or at a local park.

  • Have a garage sale or yard sale. It’s a fun way to clear out things you’re no longer using and make some extra money for savings during your no spend challenge.
  • Read together. It’s what families did before TV. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to help your kids fall in love with books this month. Try a family reading challenge for even more fun.
  • Make banana splits or ice cream sundaes with only the items in your pantry and fridge. You can make it a contest! Bragging rights go to the person with the tastiest creation.
  • Stargaze in the backyard. It’s the perfect time to learn about constellations and mythology with your kids.
  • Have a dance competition. This is a family favorite at our house! Each family member gets to pick a song. The chicken dance, YMCA by Village People, It’s Raining Tacos, Baby Shark, and Fortnite dance challenges are all big favorites at our house.
  • Paint or draw together. Grab a piece of paper and let your kids tell you what to draw for a fun and totally free activity. Then, get the whole family involved in a drawing challenge.
