Pond Theme Activities – STEM – Free Printables
Pond theme activities for preschoolers are an enchanting and educational way to celebrate the arrival of spring. As the weather warms and nature bursts back into life, ponds become a hub of activity, providing a perfect backdrop for young children to learn and play.
Engaging in pond theme activities allows preschoolers to explore the fascinating world of aquatic plants and animals while developing important skills through fun, hands-on experiences.
Here are some delightful pond theme activities that can bring joy and wonder to preschoolers in the spring:
- Pond Life Sensory Bin: Create a sensory bin filled with water, plastic aquatic animals, rocks, and aquatic plants. Preschoolers can use their hands to explore this mini pond, developing their sense of touch and learning about the different creatures that live in a real pond environment. This Pond Theme Slime is always a big hit with kids of all ages.
- Frog Jumping Game: Turn learning into active play with a frog jumping game. Cut out lily pads from green paper and spread them out on the floor or use the Duck Mats Here. Children can pretend to be frogs and hop from lily pad to lily pad, encouraging gross motor skills and coordination.
- Duck Pond Art: Provide preschoolers with blue paper, yellow paint, and feathers to create their own duck pond scenes. They can use their fingers or brushes to paint ducks and add feathers for a tactile experience. This activity promotes creativity and fine motor development.
- Pond Creature Puppets: Craft simple puppets using felt or paper bags and decorate them to look like pond creatures such as fish, turtles, and frogs. Children can then use these puppets to put on a puppet show, which fosters imaginative play and storytelling skills.
- Water Lily Origami: Teach preschoolers how to fold simple origami water lilies. This activity is great for developing patience and dexterity, and the finished lilies can be used to decorate the classroom or float in a bowl of water to create a mini pond.
- Pond Exploration Walk: Organize a field trip to a local pond if possible. Equip the children with magnifying glasses and binoculars and let them observe the environment. They can look for insects, birds, and other spring-active wildlife. Grab the Free Pond Scavenger Hunt Here.
- Fish Sorting Game: Use colored fish cutouts or fish toys and have children sort them by color, size, or type. This activity is fun and educational, as it teaches sorting and categorization skills.

Bells loves using her science set. She has spent a lot of time measuring out the water and checking out all of the cool things found in the pond.
Exploring collections found around the pond
Bells is really into counting and numbers right now, so we used these adorable ducks as part of our math set-up. We have also really enjoyed The Young Minds Numbers & Counting Video it is filled with beautiful pictures and classical music.
At this point Bells doesn’t really watch any videos, but this was great for us to put on for 5-10 minutes a day. The whole video is approximately 45 minutes and if you have Amazon Prime you can view it for free.
Duck Counting Mats
I’ve always been a Raffi fan, so incorporating a little music and dance inspired by our pond theme is perfect! I found these adorable duck counting cards on Life Over C’s. I’ve provided the link below.
I apologize for not sharing our set up and activities with the actual printables this month, but we’ve had such a great time exploring the actual pond 🙂 We have enjoyed the printables a lot at home though. You’ll find fun coloring pages, cutting pages/handwriting pages and read and write pond words.
