15 Acts of Kindness for Kids to Do At Home

Check out these fun and random acts of kindness for kids to do at home. Choosing just a few of these ways to show kindness each day is a great way to encourage your children to be more kind and loving to others.

  1. Smile at others. Did you know that smiling can actually make you feel happy? It’s also a great way to make others happy. Wouldn’t it be great if your kids walked around the house smiling at you? The best part is that smiling is contagious, so once your kids are smiling, the whole family will be too!
  2. Write letters or draw pictures for family members. Kids can write a note or draw a picture for parents, grandparents, or siblings. Sometimes my kids draw pictures and tape them up beside my bed. It’s nice to see them when I go to bed at the end of a long day. It always makes me smile to see their adorable artwork. Drawing a picture or writing a note to a sibling after an argument can also be a great way to apologize.
  3. Help bring in the groceries. Even small children can carry lightweight bags with chips or bread. Helping mom or dad carry items from the store is an easy way for kids to show appreciation by being kind and helpful.
  4. Do a chore without being asked. Noticing something that needs to be done and helping to take care of chores around the home without being told to do so is a great way to be kind to Mom, Dad, and your home.
  5. Give someone a compliment. We all like to feel appreciated. Encouraging children to compliment others is a great way to help them learn to notice others and build empathy.
  6. Share a favorite toy with a sibling. It can be hard to share, especially if it’s a beloved toy. Encouraging kids to share with siblings can be a really big act of kindness that will have them all smiling.
  7. Call a grandparent. Calling a grandparent on the phone or through a video message is a great way to show kindness to Grandma and Grandpa from home. Services like Zoom and Facetime are perfect for these acts of kindness.
  8. Leave a thank you note and a treat for the mailman. This act of kindness can be fun for kids and it’s a great way to show appreciation for the people who deliver your Amazon packages.
  9. Give free hugs! Everyone loves hugs. Sneaking up on family members and dishing out free hugs is a really fun way to show kindness and spread joy to the whole house.
  10. Tell someone a joke. You can spread kindness and laughter by telling a funny joke to someone at home. Even if they don’t get the punch line right, your child’s enthusiasm is sure to make you smile and giggle.
  11. Feed the birds. Setting up a bird feeder in your yard is a simple and fun way you can help your kids show kindness to all God’s creatures. Kids can help build the bird feeder or make bird seed ornaments.
  12. Listen. Listening is a really important way to show kindness to others. Everyone likes to feel heard. Teaching our kids to be good listeners and giving them opportunities to practice the skill is an act of kindness that keeps on giving.
  13. Lend a favorite toy or shirt to a sibling. Giving a favorite shirt to a younger sibling for the day or sharing a special toy is a good way to spread kindness.
  14. Bake cookies for a neighbor. Kids can help make cookies and deliver them to neighbors as a fun way to be kind to the people in your neighborhood.
  15. Gather old toys and books to donate to other kids. This act of kindness is a great way to encourage empathy, consideration, and discourage materialism.
