Beginning Nature Study with Kids
We have learned a lot through nature study. It’s a fantastic way to engage young children and kinesthetic learners in hands-on science learning fun.
There’s a lot you can learn about a lot of different things when you’re exploring the outdoors. We have had history lessons in National Parks, botany lessons, and even first aid lessons while treating blisters and scrapes.
When you begin incorporating nature study for kids in your lessons, there are lots of things you can do to ensure you start on a high note. First, think about what you’d like to get out of your Spring nature study adventures. Then, think about what will work best for your individual kids.
Study of Nature
Here are some of our favorite Spring nature study tips to remember:
- Don’t forget to check the weather. You don’t want to get caught in an April shower half a mile or more from the shelter.
- If it’s chilly, dress in layers you can take off if/when your kids get too warm.
- Wear the right shoes. Exploring nature in flip-flops is only a good idea and the beach.
- Always wear sunscreen and bug spray. There’s nothing worse than battling mosquitos on your nature walk or getting a sunburn.
- Bring your nature journal or Spring nature study printables to record what you see and hear while you’re out exploring.
- Let your kids set the pace. Choose trails they can manage and let them decide whether to race ahead or linger over an insect crawling on a log.
Starting a Spring Nature Journal

Download and print these Spring nature study observation pages for your kids. Then, send them outside with this printable and a pencil (ok, a clipboard helps too).
Before long, your whole family will be having fun filling in these nature study pages with blossoms, seeds, and their favorite things about Spring. Creating a Spring nature journal from the pages will be a cinch.

Teaching the Scientific Method with Observation Journals and Spring Nature Study
Did you know you can use these Spring nature study printables for kids to teach the scientific method too? Learning to use the scientific method is an important critical thinking skill and a big part of elementary science education.
Scientists use the scientific method to explore observations, test their ideas, and find answers.
You can use these free printable Spring nature study pages to help your kids record their observations as they explore nature this season. Encourage your elementary learners to seek out local flora and fauna, observe colors and patterns in nature, and collect flower and seed samples along the way.
Fun Spring Activities and Ideas for Nature Study
There are lots of fun activities and methods for getting reluctant kids excited about nature study this Spring! Most kids are excited to be outdoors and predisposed to exploring nature when given the chance. But if your kids are a bit like one of my kiddos who would rather be inside in the air conditioning, you might need some incentives.
Exploring Nature with your Child
Make learning about plants and animals fun and interesting.
Check out some of our favorite ways to make nature study a bit more exciting this Spring:
I love the idea of a micro hike! If you live in the city, where greenspace is sometimes in short supply, a micro hike is a fun way to squeeze in nature study this Spring without driving to the country. All you need is curiosity, a notebook, and a magnifying glass.
We like this Kids Magnifier from Primary Science for exploring all the tiny things in our neighborhood with small hands. Plus, it comes with large tweezers for even more nature study fun this Spring.
On a micro hike, you’re only exploring what you can see through the lens of a magnifying glass. It’s a great way for kids to get up close and personal with all the tiny things that make up your local ecosystem.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
My free printable Spring nature study page includes a section just for this paper bag scavenger hunt idea. Your kids will get a list of items to find while you’re out exploring, including blossoms and leaves.
With this nature study for kids activity, you’ll need to give each child a paper bag and a printable Spring observation nature study page to take with them as they explore. Kids can search for and check off the scavenger hunt items on the included list and choose nature “treasures” they discover to include in their paper bags too.
