Emotional Activities for Preschoolers

Emotional activities are important skills for kids to learn.

Thanksgiving Feelings and Emotions Activities

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to help little ones explore emotions while learning about gratitude, family, and community. Here are some engaging ways to blend the holiday theme with social-emotional learning:

Gratitude Turkey Feathers
Have kids decorate paper feathers with pictures or words representing things that make them happy, then glue them onto a turkey body. This teaches them to identify and express positive emotions tied to gratitude.

Feelings Faces Matching Game
Create turkey-themed cards showing different facial expressions (happy, sad, surprised, scared, excited) and have kids match the emotion to the correct turkey face. This builds emotional vocabulary in a fun, low-pressure way.

“How Does the Turkey Feel?” Story Time
Read a Thanksgiving story (like A Turkey for Thanksgiving) and pause to ask kids how they think the characters are feeling at different points. This encourages perspective-taking and empathy.

Thankful Heart/Feelings Journal
Simple journals where kids draw or dictate what they’re thankful for each day leading up to Thanksgiving help them connect gratitude with positive feelings like joy, comfort, and love.

Emotion Charades with a Twist
Act out Thanksgiving scenarios (finding out dinner is ready, dropping a pie, seeing family after a long time) and have kids guess the emotion being portrayed. This is great for recognizing emotions through body language and facial expressions.

Pumpkin Pie Breathing Exercise
Teach kids a calming technique by having them pretend to “smell the pie” (inhale) and “blow out the candle” (exhale), a playful way to introduce self-regulation strategies for big feelings.

Cornucopia of Compliments
Kids take turns saying something kind about a friend or family member, building emotional connection and reinforcing positive social interactions.

Feelings Bingo with Thanksgiving Pictures
Use Thanksgiving-themed images (a turkey, a pie, a family table) paired with emotion words, helping kids build a bridge between context and feelings.

Emotions and Feelings Preschool Activities

Children need to be taught skills to learn what emotions and feelings are and how to handle them.

That is why we continue to share fun ways to work on Social Emotional development.

What is Social Emotional Development

Children and adults need social emotional skills to be successful in every situation they will have for their whole lives. Children need to understand, experience, express, and manage their emotions  These skills help build confidence, understand their own strengths and weaknesses, collaborate with peers, enjoy social situations, develop strong relationships, and make good decisions.
