My kids are loving art lately, and I have to say I am totally embracing their creativity and letting them make new things every day. As much as I’d love to tell you I’m always like this, I’m not. I think a big part of enjoying it now is teaching the kids the steps in preparing for a project and making art and crafts easy and fun. This way they can help with the whole process. This super cool Tile Art for Kids is perfect. It’s fun, easy to make and they turn out beautiful. Plus, children of all ages love sharpie markers. Have fun creating beautiful sharpie art with your kids.

Easy Art for Kids
We love easy art ideas for kids. Whether it’s craft ideas that take less than thirty minutes to make or simple art project ideas children can do alone or as a group.
Using a spoon or straw, put little puddles of alcohol all over the colored tile. Do not add to much alcohol at once or the color will all run together and get muddy. Make sure to add just a little bit at a time all over and let the drops/puddles naturally run into each other. (Kids can also use a dropper)
I had the kids use a dropper while I tried out the straw. The dropper is great for working fine motor skills.
The tile will be mostly covered in alcohol at this point.

Look how pretty they are! Don’t you think they turned out lovely?
Let your tile art dry for a couple of hours. As tiles are drying, you can add a few drops of alcohol in areas that fade out more than others so they will keep the mosaic look.

Does the Sharpie color stay put if you don’t burn off the alcohol and instead just let it air-dry? We had some sealed (glossy) tiles and tried it this afternoon, and 6 hours later even though the tiles have been completely dry for a while, the color smudges if you wipe your finger on it. I was hoping to do this as a craft at a scout event with 150 campers, and we wouldn’t be able to use a flame/heat to set the color.
The sharpie will stay on but they need to let them set for at least 24+ hours. The key is to only use a few drops of alcohol and not soak the tiles.
Where did you purchase your tile?
Home Depot
Did you use glossy coated tiles?
Yes
OK this is a cheeks idea
Thanks
Would they actually seal enough to use them as a backsplash? I LOVE this idea! We are redoing our kitchen and I think this would be amazing to add as some accents that our kids made.
My mom suggested the same thing 🙂 If you do the lighter (burning the alcohol off) at the end I would think it would work great.
We just bought the items for this project today to let my kids create coasters for their grandmothers (and myself) for Mother’s Day. We found hexagon shaped tiles that my older daughter liked better than the square ones. Really excited to do this! Also we got a couple of bigger ones for them to do a trivet too!!
I can’t wait to hear how they come out. 🙂 Have Fun!
Once dry, do you need to Mod Podge or anything over it so the color doesn’t get messy if the tile gets wet? Or does the burning off/drying process seal the color on there?
Thanks!
The burning off does seal it. We left a lot of ours untouched and haven’t had any problems with the color wearing off but they haven’t gotten soaked (just a little condensation)
