The sharpie will stay on but they need to let them set for at least 24+ hours. The key is to only use a few drops of alcohol and not soak the tiles.

We had some sealed (glossy) tiles and tried it this afternoon, and 6 hours later even though the tiles have been completely dry for a while, the color smudges if you wipe your finger on it. I was hoping to do this as a craft at a scout event with 150 campers, and we wouldn’t be able to use a flame/heat to set the color.

My mom suggested the same thing 🙂 If you do the lighter (burning the alcohol off) at the end I would think it would work great.
