Super Squishy DIY Soap Dough
I have to be honest when I was given this task to make soap dough I wasn’t feeling it. Not that I thought we wouldn’t enjoy it, because I love homemade dough. I just knew my youngest son with SPD would want to eat it and I needed to make sure that didn’t happen. Thankfully, he was happy to just smell and squish this DIY soap dough in his hands. It’s been a fun experience.
Soap Dough
DIY Soap Dough
Soap dough is a wonderful sensory activity that combines creativity with practicality, making it perfect for children of all ages. This moldable ball is essentially handmade soap that has a playdough-like consistency, allowing kids to sculpt, shape, and design their own custom soap creations.
Homemade Soap Dough
Making soap dough from scratch at home is surprisingly easy and requires just a few basic ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen or can pick up at your local craft store. Unlike traditional soap making that involves safety precautions, soap dough is beginner-friendly and safe enough for kids to help make under adult supervision.
The beauty of homemade soap dough is that it’s completely customizable, you can add natural colorants like mica powder or food coloring to create vibrant hues, incorporate essential oils for delightful scents, or even mix in dried flowers or glitter for extra visual appeal.
Once you’ve mastered the basic technique, you can experiment with different colors and fragrances to create unique batches for various occasions or seasons.
This fun sensory activity craft can be prepared ahead of time for playdates, parties, or for your family to enjoy.
DIY Soap Dough Recipe
1 cup Cornstarch
1/4 cup Organic Castile Liquid Soap (I make homemade Castile soap too – recipe coming soon)
1/4 cup Water
A few drops of color – We used Washable Liquid Watercolor paints because I try to use washable with kids and I like the vibrant colors. You can also use food coloring.
Optional 2 Tablespoons Oil (Glycerine Vegetable, Coconut, Almond, other)
Optional 2-4 drops of essential oils (I added in Carrot Seed Oil because of all of the great benefits for your skin)
Directions:
Pour the cornstarch into a bowl
In a separate bowl add Castile soap, water, color (optional essential oils) and mix.
Pour your liquid into the bowl with cornstarch and mix.
Add optional oil and knead the soap dough so it’s well blended.
*The soap dough should feel soft and squishy but not wet or sticky. If you feel like it is to wet just add a pinch or two of cornstarch.
Dish Soap Dough
We made a couple of batches with different colors. After having fun playing with it we made them into pretty soap balls
This is how the inside of them turned out after we blended the colors together. Totally optional of course but look at how much fun they are!
If you have a child or friend that loves Tie Dye these would make perfect DIY gifts.
Why Soap Dough is Great for Kids
Sensory Development: The soft, pliable texture provides excellent tactile stimulation, helping children develop fine motor skills as they knead, roll, and shape the dough.
Creativity and Imagination: Kids can mold soap dough into animals, flowers, letters, or any shape they can dream up, encouraging artistic expression and imaginative play.
Educational Opportunity: Making soap dough introduces basic chemistry concepts in a safe, hands-on way. Children learn about mixing ingredients and chemical reactions while creating something useful.
Encourages Good Hygiene: When kids make their own soap, they’re more excited to use it! Handwashing becomes fun rather than a chore, especially when they’ve crafted the soap themselves.
Screen-Free Activity: This craft provides engaging, tactile entertainment that keeps children away from screens while developing important developmental skills.
Great for Gifts: Children take pride in creating handmade soap creations to give to family and friends, teaching them about thoughtfulness and generosity.
Whether you’re looking for a rainy day activity, a birthday party craft, or simply a fun bonding experience, soap dough is an excellent choice that’s both entertaining and functional.
