Color changing milk experiment explanation
While your children might think this is pure magic (and maybe you do as well!), it’s not, but it sure does look like it!
How it works is the the added dish soap touches the milk and that is what causes the fat and water in the milk to spread and separate. While it looks like magic, it’s actually true science!
Your kids will think it is so cool to watch!

How to Make Magic Milk
What you will need to make your Magic Milk Experiment is in this picture below. However, I have it displayed in a recipe list form to print out towards the bottom of the page. Have Fun!
Gather up the needed supplies:
- Whole Milk
- Dawn Dish Soap
- Red & Green Food Coloring
- Q-tips

Magic Milk Experiment Steps
Pour enough milk into a deep plate or pie pan so it’s about ½ inch deep. Using milk that has higher fat content will give your children the best visual for this science activity.

Place drops of red and green food coloring on top of the milk.

Dip a q-tip into the dish soap and gently touch the drops of food coloring and watch it spread.

It starts small and then will spread more over time.

Just hold it in place and move it a little bit to start the process.

Swirl it around and mix the colors as well.

See how pretty it can look?
Perfect Kindergarten Science and Preschool Science

Another fun thing to do is place a cookie cutter in the middle of the plate and
place food coloring drops around it and watch how the color doesn’t get in once
it’s touched with the dish soap.

Have fun experimenting with this cool science activity.
