Montessori DIY Button Christmas Tree

With a tight budget and a love for Montessori living sometimes DIYing can be the best thing. Bells really loved her button turkey last month, so I knew I wanted to have another button activity for the winter. This Montessori inspired DIY button Christmas tree seemed perfect for practicing an important practical life skill.

Don’t you love seeing these little fingers in action?

Directions for This Easy DIY Button Christmas Tree:

I used 2 different colored felt sheets (you can use less or more that is up to you). I had planned on cutting different colored circles out for the button ornaments, but Bells really wanted to use glitter. So I went with white felt circles that she decorated herself.

Between 8-12 Medium sized Buttons and thread. Bella likes colors, so we went with a variety of colors. You could choose to do everything in red and green which would also make a festive holiday tree.

First I freehand cut the large green tree. This was easy. Sharp Scissors make a huge difference 😉

I would definitely suggest using Spray Adhesive if you plan on using glitter. Spray adhesive dries clear and doesn’t leave any bumps. It also works great with felt.

Cut out 8-12 circles in different colors putting a small slit in the middle (make sure the button will fit through your hole). See above how we did it.

Sew the buttons on or if you have an older child they can help with the cutting and sewing.

Your DIY button tree is ready to go. You can easily use this as a fun holiday busy bag.

This is one happy girl that is so proud of herself. She did a wonderful job making the glitter ornaments and she added them all to her tree by herself. Yay!
