We always start the summer season is by talking about beach safety and learning more about the Ocean. Since we live at the beach, water safety, ocean animals, and, taking care of our environment are huge.

I hadn’t planned on starting this themed unit so soon, but the weather is excellent, and we’ve already begun heading to the beach. All children love Ocean Preschool Activities, Ocean Animals Printables and learning more about the Ocean Zones.

I’m a big fan of Setting up a full themed area for each unit study. This one is a combination because we’ve including math activities, Science, Montessori 3-part cards for ocean animals, Ocean Zones coloring page and Ocean books.

Ocean Zones for Kids

The ocean unit study began with this amazing marine biology unit study, which taught us more about the five layers of the ocean (also known as Ocean Zones).

I’ve included colored labels so you can enjoy this activity with your kids.

The fantastic thing about the ocean is that some creatures and organisms live in each of the zones.

In our homeschooling, we use mason jars a lot. I suggest every homeschooler or teacher keep a case handy.

To make these Ocean Zones Jars, we added light blue and dark blue food coloring, starting with one drop of light blue and adding more as we went down the layers.

It was fun to include ocean animals as counters this time. We also have shells and sea glass that can be used for counting or loose parts.
