This summer I knew I wanted to add Marine biology to our topics of study. We have spent years enjoying the beach and have had so many amazing natural learning experiences. It was time to take it to the next level. Plus, I really wanted to be able to share more ocean ideas with you. Hopefully, you are excited because these Ocean activities and printables are amazing! The Best Ocean Unit Study for Kids
Do you have a nature table or Science area at your house or school? I’m really hoping you said yes because this is a favorite spot of ours. If you don’t have a designated area you might want to consider adding one occasionally. They can be great for hands-on learning.
Fill your table up with sensory experiences, natural materials, and loose parts for your children to enjoy.

Ocean Activities
If you’re not familiar with loose parts they are awesome! They can be anything small and loose
Some examples for Ocean inspired loose parts are:
sea glass
glass beads
rocks
driftwood
small figures or ocean animals
any natural materials
colored beads
pom poms
shells… The list is endless.
Loose parts are great for your child’s imagination. They can play, build, or decorate however they want. They can count with them, enjoy the different textures of them, and create their own story with them.

Water makes up approximately 71% of the Earth’s surface. That water is filled with cool things to learn about and explore. Have fun!

My kids and I had the best time coloring these the other day. I’m sure your child will love it too. If not maybe this can be a mommy coloring page. You know coloring can be a perfect stress reliever activity for mommies.

Ocean Science Activities for Kids
Exploring the ocean can be fun and educational, even if you’re far from the shore! Here are some engaging ocean science activities for kids that encourage curiosity, creativity, and learning:
Saltwater Density Experiment
Materials: Two clear cups, water, salt, spoon, small objects (grape, plastic toy, etc.)
Steps:
- Fill both cups with water.
- Add several tablespoons of salt to one cup and stir until dissolved.
- Drop the same object into both cups.
- Observe: Objects float better in saltwater!
Science: The salt increases water’s density, making it easier for things to float.
DIY Ocean in a Bottle
Materials: Clear bottle or jar, water, blue food coloring, vegetable oil, seashells or small ocean toys
Steps:
- Fill the bottle halfway with water and add blue food coloring.
- Add small shells or toys.
- Fill the rest of the bottle with oil.
- Seal tightly and shake gently.
Science: The oil and water don’t mix, creating ocean-like waves when you tilt the bottle.
Tide Pool Exploration (Field Trip)
If you live near the coast, visit a tide pool with a bucket and magnifying glass.
- Observe crabs, sea stars, anemones, and snails.
- Discuss how these creatures adapt to changing water levels and waves.
Ocean Layers in a Jar
Materials: Tall clear jar, corn syrup, dish soap, colored water, vegetable oil, rubbing alcohol
Steps:
- Carefully pour each liquid into the jar in this order: corn syrup, dish soap, colored water, vegetable oil, colored rubbing alcohol.
- Watch as each liquid forms a separate layer.
Science: Each layer represents a different ocean zone, with varying densities and temperatures.
Marine Animal Research Project
Assign each child a different ocean animal (dolphin, octopus, shark, etc.).
- Research where it lives, what it eats, and a fun fact.
- Create a poster or a short presentation to share with the group.
Edible Coral Reefs
Materials: Graham crackers, blue frosting, assorted candies (gummy fish, marshmallows, licorice)
Steps:
- Spread blue frosting on crackers as the ocean.
- Use candies to build a coral reef and add ocean animals.
- Discuss how coral reefs support ocean life—then enjoy your snack!
Ocean Sensory Bottles
Materials: Plastic bottle, small shells, sand, water, blue glitter
Steps:
- Fill the bottle with water, sand, shells, and glitter.
- Seal and shake to hear the ocean-like sounds.
- Listen and imagine being by the sea.
Pollution Demonstration
Materials: Large bowl, water, small figures, spoon, net or strainer
These activities make ocean science accessible and exciting for kids, helping them understand the wonders and importance of our oceans!
