You can make just one color or create a full rainbow depending on how much time you have.

The best part is how easy cleanup can be, especially if you set it up in a bathtub or large plastic bin. Rainbow Soap Foam Sensory Play Activity: Colorful, Fun, and Simple Play

How to Make Rainbow Soap Foam

Making rainbow soap foam requires just a few basic supplies and takes only minutes to prepare. Your kids will love playing with this colorful soap foam. So get ready to create bright, fluffy foam that holds its shape and children enjoy for hours.

Rainbow Foam Ingredients and Supplies

You need dish soap as your main ingredient. Any brand works, but clear dish soap shows colors better than white or cloudy varieties.

Tap water is fine, though distilled water can create slightly better results.

For coloring, you can use either food coloring or liquid watercolors. Liquid watercolors create more vibrant results than standard food coloring drops. You’ll want at least 3-4 different colors to make your rainbow foam.

You’ll need a whisk, or mixer to create the foam.

You also need a large mixing bowl, small cups to divide colors, and a bin or tray to hold the finished rainbow soap foam.

Homemade Soap Foam Recipe and Instructions

Mix the dish soap and water in your large bowl.

Don’t whisk yet or you’ll create too many bubbles too soon.

To make the foam you will want to whip 2 parts water with 1 part clear dish soap.

For this exact project we used only 4 tablespoons of water with 2 tablespoons of dish soap per color-and that made about 7 cups of bubbles!

I added 1 teaspoon of Sax non toxic glitter watercolor at the same time as adding the water and soap.

Because this is such a small volume of liquid to start with, many stand mixers will have a harder time starting the bubble making process.

A super easy and quick fix for this is to simply whisk the mixture by hand for the first 5 to 10 seconds. This should generate more than enough bubbles to have the mixer then take over and create a voluminous rainbow of bubbles.

Tips:

  • Mix one color at a time.
  • A mixer will work better than a blender.
  • Food coloring can also be used, keep in mind that both paint and or food coloring could stain clothing or surfaces. This did not happen with the exact Sax paint we used.
  • The longer you whip the bubbles, the longer they will last for!

Tips for Vibrant and Safe Coloring

Liquid watercolors produce the brightest, most saturated colors in soap foam. They mix into the soap more evenly than food coloring and won’t stain hands as easily. However, they can stain clothes, so dress kids appropriately.

Standard food coloring from the grocery store works fine but requires more drops to get bold colors. Start with 5 drops and add more if needed. Gel food coloring is too thick and doesn’t mix well into the foam recipe.

Always use non-toxic, washable colorants, especially if young children will play with the rainbow foam. Check labels to confirm safety. Avoid using paint or dyes not meant for skin contact.

If colors look too pale, add more drops to your soap mixture before whipping. It’s harder to add color after the foam forms. For natural alternatives, try beet juice for pink, turmeric for yellow, or spirulina powder for green, though these won’t be as vibrant.

Creative Rainbow Sensory Play Ideas

Rainbow soap foam opens up countless ways to play, from simple sensory bins to hands-on learning activities that keep kids engaged for hours. Setting up the right play space and having a cleanup plan makes the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Sensory Play Setups and Sensory Bin Use

You can transform your rainbow soap foam into an exciting sensory bin by choosing the right container for your space. A large plastic storage bin works great for indoor play, while a water table is perfect for outdoor mess-making.

Add small toys and objects to extend the play. Easter eggs, plastic animals, or small cups give kids something to hide, find, and scoop. You can create themed bins like an ocean scene with blue foam and sea creatures or a rainbow cloud world with all the colors mixed together.

Layer different colored foams in clear containers to show the rainbow effect. This works especially well in tall bins where kids can see the colors stacked on top of each other. Give your child tools like spoons, whisks, or small shovels to explore the different textures.

Fun Activities and Playful Learning Extensions

Your rainbow foam becomes a learning tool when you add simple activities. Mix two colors together to teach basic color theory—combine yellow and blue foam to make green, or red and blue to create purple.

Set up a pretend ice cream shop where kids scoop different colored foam into bowls or cones. This foam play activity builds fine motor skills while keeping children entertained. You can also hide letters or numbers in the foam for a learning game.

Create foam paintings by letting kids spread the colorful foam onto paper or cardboard. The texture adds a fun twist to regular art projects. Use the foam for sensory writing practice by having kids trace letters or shapes in the puffy surface.

Turn bath time into a sensory activity by making smaller amounts of foam in different colors. Kids can paint the tub walls or themselves with the safe, washable foam.

Mess Management and Easy Cleanup

Place a large plastic tablecloth or shower curtain under your sensory bin to catch spills and drips. This simple step makes cleanup much faster and protects your floors from soap and water.

Keep wet washcloths nearby for quick hand wipes during play. The soap foam rinses off easily with water, so you don’t need special cleaning products. Set up your activity near a bathroom or outdoor hose for convenient cleanup access.

Store leftover foam in airtight containers in the fridge for a day or two, though fresh foam works best. The bubbles may deflate slightly, but you can whip them back up with a quick blend. Dispose of used foam down the drain with running water—the soap actually helps clean your pipes.
