Rain Cloud Craft
Let’s face it, many of us have various broken crayons that have been accumulating for years. Here’s a fun way to use some of them up as we patiently wait for Spring. This weather-themed raindrop activity comes with the bonus of working on fine motor skills as kiddos use the sharpeners on the crayons, tracing, and cutting.
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Old blue crayons, different shades are great
- Pencil sharpener
- Wax paper
- Scissors
- Black marker
- Tape
- Hot glue gun or craft glue
- String or bakers twine
- Cotton balls or fill for clouds
- A circle that everything can hang from, we used a small embroidery hoop

Recycled Crayon Rain Cloud
Cut two pieces of wax paper, about 18 inches long each.
Tape one piece to a table so it will stay in place while kids are working.
Starting with an empty pencil sharpener, have kids twist down to shave the crayons as much as possible.
Recycled Materials Craft
Spread the shaved wax across the piece of wax paper, then lay the second piece of wax paper on top and tape that in place.
Have an adult use an iron to melt the crayon wax between the wax papers, start with a low setting and increase the temp as needed.
The wax will harden right away and you can trace or free hand draw raindrops and cut them out.
We cut the embroidery hoop by doing a bunch of simple Larks Head Knots.

You may want to work with a piece of NON wax paper on your work surface and tape the wax paper to this and use something between the iron and wax paper. This will protect both the surface of the table and your iron. Or you can simply and carefully, wipe the surfaces with a hot wet cloth as soon as you’re done with the project.
