Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with Preschoolers
Every holiday brings a unique opportunity to celebrate with your preschoolers. This St. Patrick’s Day, get ready for all kinds of “lucky” fun with your little learners at home and in the classroom.
I’ve put together lots of fun activities for celebrating and learning with preschoolers this St. Patrick’s Day.
Begin celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with preschoolers by playing games and attending a parade. There are large parades for St. Patrick’s Day all over the country. If you can’t attend in person this year, consider watching the parades virtually or dressing up and parading through your neighborhood.
Here are some of our favorite games for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day to get your preschoolers moving and having lots of fun:
St. Patrick’s Day Games for Kids
Gold Coin Toss
To play, gather a few “Leprechaun pots” (buckets or bowls work just fine). Line up your pots and make a line on the floor with painter’s tape a few feet away. Then, have your preschoolers stand behind the line and try to throw gold coins into the pots. Give one point for each coin that lands in a pot. Don’t forget St. Patrick’s Day prizes for the winners.
Leprechaun Tag
This game works best with a large group and plenty of space to run about. To play, divide your preschool group into “leprechauns” and “fairies.” Choose one child to be “it,” they must trap leprechauns by tagging them. Similar to freeze tag, when the leprechaun is tagged, he or she must freeze in place .Not to worry, fairies can free leprechauns by tagging them. However, if a fairy is tagged, he or she becomes “it.”
Rainbow Relay Race
Have your preschoolers race to create their very own lucky rainbow! Divide kids into two teams and give each child a different color ribbon or crepe paper. Then, have preschoolers run across the room unrolling their ribbons. The first team to complete their rainbow with all the colors wins the rainbow relay race!
St Patrick’s Sensory Bottle
Sensory Activities for St. Patrick’s Day
I love incorporating sensory play into preschool lessons. These activities engage your child’s senses while learning and exploring. Sensory activities help preschoolers develop connections and build cognitive thinking skills.
I’ve put together a fun rainbow sensory play dough that’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day lesson plans.
You can use this play dough to encourage creativity and build fine motor skills with your preschoolers in the classroom or at home this March.
St Patrick’s Day Activities
Want to extend the sensory learning? Hide “leprechaun treasures” in your rainbow dough for preschoolers to discover. Coins (real or plastic), large beads, and plastic shamrocks make great “treasures” for preschoolers to uncover while building lots of finger strength and problem solving skills too.
St. Patrick’s Day Math Activities
Little leprechauns must learn how to count the coins in their pots of gold, right? St. Patricks’ Day is the perfect holiday for building early math skills with your preschoolers. There are so many fun ways to have St. Patrick’s Day fun while practicing patterns, counting, and number recognition skills with your preschoolers.
Here are some fun ideas for St. Patricks’ Day math activities:
Pattern Practice
There’s lots of fun to be had practicing patterns with your preschoolers with St. Patrick’s Day learning activities. Create concrete pattern practice with Lucky Charms cereal. Kids can have fun finishing patterns you create and making their own. Plus, it makes for a yummy snack after all the math learning fun.
Counting Gold Coins
Every good leprechaun needs to be able to count their coins. You can help your preschoolers pretend to be little leprechauns by giving each child a “pot of gold” (small cup) filled with gold coins.
Preschoolers will have fun counting all the coins in their pot of gold. Plus, they’ll be learning early math skills like one to one correspondence and counting skills.

Early Literacy Activities for St. Patrick’s Day
There are lots of great ways to build literacy with your preschoolers using these St. Patrick’s Day lesson plans and ideas. Here are a few great ways to build early literacy skills with St.Patricks’ Day activities for preschoolers.
Book Suggestions
My favorite way to build early literacy skills is with books. Reading aloud to preschoolers is the very best way to encourage them to fall in love with books and learn to love reading at an early age.
Here are some of our favorite preschool books for St. Patrick’s Day:
Shamrock Letters
Using green construction paper, cut out 26 paper shamrocks. Write a different letter of the alphabet on each shamrock. Once your letters are ready, you can use them in lots of ways to help preschoolers practice letter recognition and phonemic awareness.
First, have kids identify the letters on each shamrock. Flip the shamrocks over and have kids take turns uncovering letters and correctly identifying them. Then, practice phonemic awareness by sending your preschoolers on a shamrock hunt around the room. Hide the shamrocks throughout the room and ask preschoolers to bring you the hidden shamrocks. Then, have them tell you which sound each letter.
St. Patrick’s Day STEM Learning Fun
There are lots of fun ways to incorporate STEM learning fun into your St. Patrick’s Day preschool lesson plans. It’s the perfect time to build a leprechaun trap or leprechaun garden with your preschoolers to learn early engineering skills while having some St. Patrick’s Day fun together too.
St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to study rainbows with your preschool learners too. Kids can learn about this beautiful weather phenomenon with science experiments and STEM engineering projects:
