Fall is here, and pumpkins are everywhere, making them the perfect seasonal tool for hands-on exploration and learning with young children. Beyond just carving jack-o’-lanterns, pumpkins offer endless opportunities for sensory play, creative expression, and early academic skill-building.
Whether you’re digging through slimy pumpkin guts, counting seeds, painting a pumpkin masterpiece, or using one to teach basic science concepts, these versatile fall favorites can turn an ordinary afternoon into an exciting learning adventure.

Fun Ways for Exploring Pumpkins in Autumn
The days of fall are upon us. I can’t say that fall is my favorite season because summer truly has my heart, however, autumn is a close second. When the leaves are changing, the world looks a little more beautiful. In the fall, you have pumpkins, mums, and the smell of apple cider filling the air.
I couldn’t resist another nature table change. It is probably our 4th one this month, but there is just so much to see and so many changes taking place outside.

Even though I like to make things fun, I always make sure to get our learning in. All I know is we are enjoying these snuggle days of fun and exploring.

Autumn is the perfect time to turn pumpkins into a hands-on learning adventure for young children. Start by inviting your preschooler to touch, smell, and describe the pumpkin’s bumpy exterior before scooping out the stringy, slimy insides, a sensory experience kids love (even if it gets a little messy!).
Counting and sorting pumpkin seeds builds early math skills, while measuring the pumpkin’s height and rolling it to compare sizes introduces basic science concepts.
For a creative twist, try painting pumpkins instead of carving them, or turn a small pumpkin into a nature-inspired art project using leaves, googly eyes, and pom-poms.
You can even use pumpkins as a jumping-off point for storytelling, singing pumpkin-themed songs, or going on a pumpkin patch scavenger hunt.
These simple, engaging activities not only celebrate the sights and textures of fall but also encourage curiosity, creativity, and hands-on discovery.

Today, we‘re learning math by discussing guesses, educated guessing, estimating, and then counting the seeds to see how many we have.
It was 290 seeds in this small pumpkin. After all the counting was done, we washed the seeds, roasted them, and then shared them with all the children.
Little B did a few fun activities, like button sorting- small, medium, and large with autumn buttons. In addition to color sorting, we also carved the Jack-o-lanterns.
