This Fall, encourage daily gratitude at home to help strengthen family relationships during the holiday stress. It’s a great way to keep the stress of the holidays from putting stress on your relationships.

How Do You Make a Gratitude Tree?

So, how can you make a gratitude tree for your family this Fall? First, you’ll need some supplies.

Part of what I love about this gratitude tree activity is that you can use what you have on hand.

Here’s what we used to make a gratitude tree:

You can use paper leaves or real leaves found in nature too. Work with what you have and make adjustments to fit your own taste for a thankful tree that’s truly unique to your family.

Once you’ve gathered your materials, you’re ready to craft your own gratitude tree

Steps to Make a Gratitude Tree

I started with a long roll of white paper and sketched the outline of a tall birch tree. Your tree can be any style you like! I just happen to love the look of a birch tree.

Then I went back and traced over the pencil lines, making adjustments as I went along, with the different markers. You don’t need to buy special markers for this project. Raid your craft supplies and use what you have on hand.

In the end, I made a smaller tree too. I realized my younger child wouldn’t be able to reach the highest branches on the tall tree, so I followed the same process to craft a smaller birch tree. You could make a tree for each member of the family or just do one tree for everyone to use.

How to Make a Thankful Tree with Gratitude Leaves

Next, cut the paper off the roll. Fold the top and bottom over and use painter’s tape to attach the tree to the wall. Using painter’s tape will ensure your paint stays safe and the paper tree doesn’t budge.

We use painter’s tape to attach the leaves to our gratitude tree as well. That way, the kids can move their leaves around as often as they want without damaging the walls. Painter’s tape is my own secret holiday decorating hack.

Once your gratitude tree is complete, invite everyone in your family to write something they’re thankful for on a leaf. Each day, add something new to your thankful tree.

You can all sit down together to fill in your leaves each day or get sneaky about adding new leaves when no one is looking. It’s completely up to you!

Gratitude Tree Craft for Kids and Adults

Gratitude Tree Craft for Kids and Adults

Gratitude Tree Craft for Kids, Adults, and even a classroom

Ingredients
  • Paper or poster board
  • Pencil
  • Black markers in different sizes
  • Painters tape
  • Foam craft leaves
  • These are the supplies we used. Adjust to what you have on hand and your preferences!
Instructions
  1. I started with a long roll of white paper and sketched the outline of the tall birch tree. Your tree can be any style you like! Then I went back and traced over the pencil lines, making adjustments as I went along, with the different markers.
  2. The smaller tree followed as I realized my younger child would likely not be able to reach most of the branches on the tall tree. I followed the same process for a smaller birch.
  3. Cut the paper off the roll, fold the top and bottom over and then use painters tape to attach the tree to the wall. Your paint should stay perfectly safe and the paper won’t budge, this is a favorite hack in our home! We attached the leaves with the painters’ tape as well. This allows kiddos to easily move the leaves around when they want to.
  4. Invite everyone in your family to write something each day that they’re thankful for, or have one happy gathering when you all sit down together and fill out all the leaves at one time, completely up to you!
