Fizzy Science Experiment
What you will need to make your Unicorn Baking Soda and Vinegar Activity is in this picture below. However, I have it displayed in a recipe list form to print out towards the bottom of the page. Have Fun!

Unicorn Science Experiments
Preschoolers may not fully understand the science behind the experiments. However, children can start to build on these concepts by doing these fun activities with you!

Start with using some baking soda and a little water to make it into a paste. Then add a couple of drops of food coloring to make it blue or whatever color you’d like to use. Next time we plan on making different colors, so it’s like a rainbow of unicorns.

Use a spoon and spoon your baking soda mixture into the unicorn molds.
Set your unicorn mold into the freezer for a couple of hours so the baking soda unicorns harden.
Next, fill your squeeze bottle or jar up with vinegar and add a squirt of dish soap into your vinegar. You can also add a couple of drops of food coloring to your vinegar (food coloring is optional).

Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment Explanation
Let’s talk about what happens when baking soda and vinegar mix? Baking Soda is a base (bicarbonate) and Vinegar is an acid
The reaction that children see is everything getting fizzy, erupting, and lots of bubbles. That is from an acid and a base mix that causes a reaction called carbon dioxide.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Science Activity
When you are ready to do the experiment or let your kids play, warm your vinegar up for 30- 45 seconds to get it warm (If you don’t warm it up it won’t react as much to the frozen baking soda).

Have fun pouring your vinegar over the little frozen unicorns and watching it fizz.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Reaction

We added the dish soap to the vinegar because it helps to make a “foamier” reaction than vinegar alone.

Science experiments are vital for children because they can help to spark a love of science and learning in a child that will ignite them throughout their life.
The simple science experiments that your child does now may spark their desire to learn and stay focused on Science and STEM in the future. And we all know we can use more of that interest in the world.
