There are so many fun acts of joy and kindness you can participate in when you adopt an elf on the shelf! It’s quickly become one of our favorite holiday traditions. The kids love discovering what the elf has been up to during the night, and I like setting up a little surprise for them each December morning.

Getting Started With the Elf on the Shelf

First, you’ll need an elf on the shelf. Discover the tradition with The Elf on the Shelf by Carol Aebersold. In her book, she explains how the elf works. Then, you can decide where to adopt your own classic elf on the shelf or some other variation.

There are so many kinds of Christmas elves available, so you can choose one that works best for your family. Then, bring smiles to your children by hiding your elf or setting up the elf in funny scenarios all over your home. Sometimes, the elf on the shelf even brings little treats!

On the elf’s first visit, your kids get to name him or her. My children had so much fun making a name for their elf on the shelf! At night, the elf returns to the North Pole to give an official report to Santa.

Having the elf report to Santa is an easy way to encourage your kids to stay on the nice list this year. You can use your elf’s report to highlight good choices, encourage kindness, and reward your kiddos for being nice.
