Books about the Ocean
Reading books together is my favorite part of homeschooling! Children learn so much from picture books and it’s an excellent way to spend quality time passing on a love of reading to your kids. You can learn a lot about the ocean from some of our favorite books.
Explore ocean habitats with Ms. Frizzle in The Magic Schoolbus on the Ocean Floor. Discover the beauty of the reef with this artistic picture book delight: Over in the Ocean in the Coral Reef. Meet ocean animals while exploring the art of collage in Eric Carle’s Mister Seahorse.

Under the Sea Games
Do you think the fish play games under the sea? You can pretend to swim around like fish with your kids, in the pool, or even in your living room. As you swim, play a game of undersea tag. Instead of “it,” pretend to be a shark and swim around looking for fish.
My kids love a silly game I invented one night at a hotel pool. I was too tired to want to get in the water, so I sat by the pool watching them swim. Periodically, I called out “Shark in the water!” and begin to count. My children would squeal and swim to the steps. If they made it to the steps before I made it to 10, they were safe. It entertained them for half an hour and they still beg to play whenever we go swimming.
As you can see, under the sea themed games are some of my favorites! Playing games together is a fun way to spend quality time that’s full of learning and (at least in our house) laughter. Games teach kids important life skills too, like how to wait for their turn and be a good sport.
