March Holidays and National Days

March brings several beloved holidays that offer chances to celebrate reading, Irish culture, and American folklore. These special days provide fun ways to engage kids and families with themed activities and learning opportunities.

Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday

March 2 marks both Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday. This special day celebrates reading and literacy for children across the country.

You can honor this day by reading Dr. Seuss books like “The Cat in the Hat” or “Green Eggs and Ham” with your kids. Many schools organize reading events where teachers, parents, and community members read aloud to students.

Try these simple activities:

Libraries and bookstores often host free events on this day. You can also create bookmarks, write silly rhymes like Dr. Seuss did, or act out scenes from his stories.

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations

St. Patrick’s Day falls on March 17 each year. This Irish holiday has become a popular celebration in America with parades, green decorations, and festive foods.

You can celebrate by wearing green clothing to avoid getting pinched. Traditional activities include making shamrock crafts, learning about Irish culture, and cooking Irish foods like corned beef and cabbage.

St. Patrick’s Day Activities:

  • Search for four-leaf clovers
  • Make rainbow crafts with pots of gold
  • Bake green cupcakes or cookies
  • Make Gold Slime for a fun sensory play idea
  • Listen to Irish music
  • Learn Irish dancing steps

Many cities host parades with floats, marching bands, and dancers. You can also set up a leprechaun trap with your children or hide chocolate gold coins around the house for a treasure hunt.

Johnny Appleseed Day Activities

National Johnny Appleseed Day happens on March 11. This day honors John Chapman, the American pioneer who planted apple trees across the country in the early 1800s.

You can teach kids about this folk hero through stories about his life and adventures. Johnny Appleseed walked barefoot, wore a tin pot as a hat, and carried apple seeds in a leather bag.

Celebrate with these apple-themed activities:

  • Visit an apple orchard
  • Make homemade applesauce
  • Bake apple pie or apple crisp
  • Plant apple seeds in small pots
  • Create apple stamp art using cut apples and paint

You can also read books about Johnny Appleseed‘s journeys or watch educational videos about his contributions to American agriculture. Kids enjoy learning how one person’s simple actions helped feed many people.

Welcoming Spring: Nature, Weather and Seasonal Events

March marks the transition from winter’s chill to spring’s warmth, bringing opportunities to explore nature and celebrate seasonal changes. The official start of spring inspires outdoor adventures, creative projects, and weather-focused activities.

First Day of Spring and Vernal Equinox

The first day of spring falls around March 20th each year, marking the vernal equinox. This is when day and night are roughly equal in length.

You can use this moment to teach kids about how Earth’s tilt affects seasons. Try a simple demonstration with a globe and flashlight to show how sunlight hits different parts of Earth.

The transition from winter to spring allows you to introduce topics that match what children observe outside.

Watch for early buds on trees, returning birds, and longer daylight hours. Keep a journal tracking when you first notice these changes.

This is also a perfect time to discuss why spring brings warmer weather and new growth. You can plant seeds indoors to watch them sprout as spring arrives.

Nature Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Spring scavenger hunts get kids exploring outdoors and noticing seasonal changes. Create a list of items to find like sprouting leaves, flower buds, bird nests, or specific colors in nature.

Make your nature hunt age-appropriate. Younger children can search for simple items like “something green” or “a smooth rock.” Older kids can look for specific plants or identify bird species.

Print out picture cards for pre-readers so they can match what they find. Include sensory items like “something soft,” “something that smells good,” or “something that makes noise.”

You can also focus on signs of spring specifically. Search for worms, new grass growth, budding flowers, or insects emerging from winter. This helps children understand how nature wakes up after cold months.

National Kite Month and Outdoor Activities

March is National Kite Month, making it ideal for wind-related activities. The blustery winds of March inspire kite flying, pinwheel-making, and weather exploration.

You can make simple kites from paper, sticks, and string. Even basic diamond-shaped kites work well for teaching about wind and aerodynamics.

Create wind socks or weather vanes to observe wind direction and strength. Hang them outside and check them daily. Record your observations to track weather patterns.

Other outdoor activities include cloud watching, measuring rainfall with homemade rain gauges, or tracking daily temperatures. March weather can vary greatly, sunny one day and stormy the next which makes it perfect for weather studies.

Spring Themed Crafts and Projects

Spring crafts bring seasonal colors and themes indoors. Paper flowers, butterfly projects, and rainbow art celebrate the brightening season.

Try making seed starters from egg cartons, flower seed bombs, or recycled crafts. Plant fast-growing seeds like beans or sunflowers so kids see quick results.

Create flower crafts from cupcake liners, tissue paper, coffee filters, or construction paper. These never wilt and add cheerful decorations to your space.

Nature crafts work well too. Press flowers between heavy books, make leaf rubbings, or create art from found natural materials. You can also paint rocks to look like ladybugs or caterpillars.

Bird feeders made from pinecones, peanut butter, and birdseed attract wildlife to observe. Hang them near windows where you can watch visiting birds as they return for spring.

Creative March Themes and Monthly Activities

March gives you chances to spark creativity through crafts, celebrate kids with special recognition days, and keep children engaged with writing and coloring activities. These activities work well at home or in the classroom to make the month memorable.

National Craft Month Projects

March is National Craft Month, which makes it the perfect time to try new creative projects with your kids. You can explore different materials and techniques throughout the entire month.

Paper crafts work well for all ages. Try making paper flowers, origami animals, or handmade greeting cards. These projects help develop fine motor skills while creating something beautiful.

Recycled crafts teach kids about reusing materials. Empty toilet paper rolls become bird feeders or pencil holders. Egg cartons transform into caterpillars or flower gardens. These projects show children how everyday items can have new purposes.

Simple Craft Ideas for March:

You can dedicate each week to a different craft type. Week one might focus on painting, week two on clay work, week three on fiber arts, and week four on mixed media projects.

Absolutely Incredible Kid Day

Absolutely Incredible Kid Day falls on the third Thursday of March each year. This special day celebrates children and recognizes their unique qualities and achievements.

The day started as a way for adults to write letters to kids in their lives. You can write to your own children, students, nieces, nephews, or any child who makes a difference. These letters tell kids what makes them special and why you appreciate them.

Your letter should be specific and personal. Mention actual moments when the child showed kindness, creativity, or determination. Talk about their talents and the ways they bring joy to others.

Kids can also participate by writing letters to their friends. This creates a culture of appreciation and positive feedback. They learn to notice good qualities in others and express gratitude.

Ways to Celebrate:

  • Write personalized letters to each child
  • Create “Why You’re Incredible” posters
  • Share favorite memories from the past year
  • Make appreciation cards for classmates
  • Record video messages highlighting each child’s strengths

March Writing Prompts for Kids

March writing prompts help children practice their writing skills while exploring seasonal topics. These prompts can tie into holidays, weather changes, or spring themes.

Spring-themed prompts ask kids to describe their favorite signs of spring or imagine what animals do when they wake from hibernation. Weather prompts might have them write about flying a kite on a windy day or playing in spring rain.

Holiday prompts connect to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Kids can write stories about finding leprechaun gold or what they would do if they found the end of a rainbow. Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd inspires creative writing in silly rhymes.

Personal reflection prompts work well too. Children can write about someone who inspires them for Women’s History Month or describes their favorite book for Read Across America Day.

You should provide prompts that match your child’s skill level. Younger kids might draw pictures and write one sentence. Older children can write full paragraphs or short stories.

Unique and Fun March Celebrations

March brings chocolate-covered treats, exciting dog sled races across Alaska, and plenty of tasty food holidays that make the month extra special.

National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day

March 24 celebrates one of the best combinations of sweet and chewy. National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day honors this classic treat that combines fruit with chocolate.

You can celebrate by making your own chocolate covered raisins at home. Melt some chocolate chips and dip raisins using a toothpick or small fork. Let them cool on wax paper.

Kids love helping with this simple activity. You can try different types of chocolate like milk, dark, or white chocolate. Some people add a sprinkle of sea salt or cinnamon for extra flavor.

Fun ways to celebrate:

  • Have a taste test with store-bought brands
  • Count how many raisins you can cover in 5 minutes
  • Mix chocolate covered raisins into trail mix or cookies
  • Learn about how raisins are made from grapes

This treat became popular in the early 1900s when candy makers started coating raisins with chocolate. It’s a healthier option than many candies since raisins provide fiber and natural sweetness.

The Iditarod: Alaskan Adventure

The Iditarod is an intense dog sled race that happens every March in Alaska. It covers over 1,000 miles from Anchorage to Nome through some of the toughest terrain on Earth.

Mushers and their dog teams brave freezing temperatures, strong winds, and challenging trails. The race takes about 8 to 15 days to complete. It started in 1973 to honor the historic serum run that saved Nome from a disease outbreak in 1925.

You can follow along with the race online and track mushers as they move through checkpoints. Kids find it exciting to learn about the Alaskan Huskies and Siberian Huskies that pull the sleds.

What makes it special:

  • Dogs wear booties to protect their paws
  • Mushers must carry survival gear and food
  • Veterinarians check dogs at every checkpoint
  • The winning musher receives prize money and recognition

This race teaches about teamwork, perseverance, and respect for animals and nature.
